@AdamNN @Basil2733 The Coll book has some interesting bits but is a disappointment overall. He seems to be enamored of his CIA sources but overlooks a lot of information that is out in the open source. Unfortunately, it is hardly comprehensive as some reviewers contend.

@michaelpbrill However, I know from firsthand experience, that the Saddam of the 1980s was somewhat different from the Saddam of the 2000s. And yet, like a fly preserved in amber, Coll presents Saddam as the blood thirst tyrant looking to devour the region. Wrong then, wrong now.

@michaelpbrill I appreciate Coll’s use of documentation, some of which you provided. It would be better if Coll included an appendix of documents or created a web site where they can be examined. They do reveal Saddam at his most confrontational.

@michaelpbrill There are plenty of other examples like this. Coll’s book is a sanitized, finely curated book that has probably relied too much on Duelfer’s guidance. We are left with a caricature of Saddam that reads like what the CIA put out that were proved wrong.

@michaelpbrill For all that Coll does uncover he curiously does not address nor dig very deeply on some of the key events in Saddam’s career. Rumsfeld’s 1983 visit is a good example. No mention of his pipeline request which is unfortunate.

@michaelpbrill Steve Coll has written an interesting but uneven book. He does unearth some nuggets but a lot of what he writes is a graceful retelling of what has been said before. The facts support the narrative and not the other way around.
