🐻 This bear was in my backyard last night.
Every time I see him, I’m reminded why securing trash matters so much.
He’s beautiful. He’s healthy. He’s exactly where a bear should be—living in the mountains he calls home.
But bears don’t know the difference between food and the plastic wrapper it came in.
When bears repeatedly gain access to garbage, they often eat plastic bags, wrappers, foil, and other trash that can cause internal injuries, intestinal blockages, infections, malnutrition, and even death.
They also learn that neighborhoods are an easy source of food.
That’s when the real problems begin.
A bear that becomes accustomed to finding food in trash cans will keep coming back. Over time, that can lead to property damage, dangerous encounters, relocation, or worse.
The bear isn’t the problem.
The bear is simply doing what bears do—looking for food.
The responsibility belongs to us.
If you live in bear country: ✔ Use bear-resistant trash containers ✔ Secure lids properly ✔ Don’t leave trash bags outside overnight ✔ Clean up spilled garbage immediately ✔ Put trash out the morning of pickup, not the night before
A fed wild animal quickly becomes a problem animal.
I love seeing bears. That’s exactly why I don’t want them eating our garbage.
The best bear encounter is one where the bear stays healthy, stays wild, and never learns that our trash is food.
🌲 Keep wildlife wild. 🐻 Protect our bears. 💚 We share this mountain home.

@united 24 hours since this terrible experience started with a diversion to Corpus Christi - United Airlines is being tricky, sent us to a hotel that didn't accept the credit, has sent no useful updates, charged for snack boxes after being stuck on the tarmack for 6 hours.
If you‘re visiting Porto and North of Portugal between June 23rd and 24th, prepare yourself for São João:
- Eat the grilled sardines
- Make a wish and launch a hot air balloon
- Play with a plastic hammer
- Enjoy the manjerico’s aroma
Will you be joining us for the festivities?
