@RoryStewartUK The spread betting markets this morning have Kamala narrowly ahead, ‘predicting’ she’ll get 268-276 EC votes v Trump’s 262-270. Late last week it was the other way round, with KH at 252-260. Could be wrong of course, but financial mkts usually better than polls.

@mattwridley That may be true, depending on where you measure energy flows, but for context you should also mention that electricity accounts for only 18 percent of UK final energy consumption. Equally hard for some to believe, I imagine.

@sototallysweet @mattwridley True, up to a point, but is any energy source 100% ‘green’? Think of all the metals and resins in wind turbines, the rare earths in solar PV, the concrete in hydro etc. When done well, #biomass ranks well, and its cultivation provides a home for beetles and woodpeckers too!

@mattwridley The difference is that sustainably managed forests regrow, absorbing carbon emitted by the small proportion of #biomass that is combusted, whereas the combustion of coal adds new carbon to the atmosphere, carbon had been sequestered millions of years ago.

@janggly @mattwridley @NetZeroWatch Subsidies? Cost of offshore wind power starting in 2023/24 will be £44/MWh. Forward price of base load power, due to sky-rocketing gas prices, is currently around £119/MWh. Go figure, as they say.

@RichardDawkins Why should Earth should be represented by a human? Humankind sets a poor example of all earthbound species and is likely to make our alien visitors cross, something to be avoided, surely. I’d feel happier if the aliens were encouraged to converse with an octopus.
