๐ต BMI stands for Body Mass Index.
๐ต It is a score calculated taking a person's weight & height into account.
๐ต BMI in the range 18.5 & 24.9 is considered Normal.
๐ต Below this range is considered Underweight & above it is Overweight/Obese
๐ต BMI though very popular has its shortcomings
โ It doesn't take body composition into account.
BMI cannot differentiate between Fat mass & Muscle mass. So for instance, if someone is muscular & heavy, BMI will still consider him as Obese.
โ It doesn't take Age, Sex, Ethnicity into consideration.
โ It gives no insight about a person's Metabolic health.
๐ต Metabolic health essentially depends on the kind of Fat that is stored in your body.
๐ต There are 2 kinds of Body Fat we store in the body:
โถ๏ธ Subcutaneous Fat
โถ๏ธ Visceral Fat
๐ต Subcutaneous fat is the fat that is deposited directly under the skin.
๐ต Visceral fat is the fat that accumulates inside & around organs such as the liver, kidneys, and intestines.
๐ต Visceral fat is more harmful than Subcutaneous fat.
๐ต Fat in the Liver especially effects your Metabolic health the most.
๐ต Those with more Visceral fat usually have a very protruding belly. It is also called Central Obesity.
๐ต Visceral Fat increases the risk of T2D, NAFLD, CVD etc considerably.
๐ต Indians & South Asians in general are genetically predisposed to having more Visceral than Subcutaneous fat.
๐ต This is why Indians generally have a Skinny fat or TOFI (Thin outside Fat inside) body type.
๐ต This is where BMI fails, people can have normal BMI, look decent from the outside, but suffer from NAFLD (Fatty liver), elevated Triglycerides & other Metabolic issues.
๐ต Insulin Resistance is the culprit!
๐ต Insulin resistance occurs at a lower body fat (non obese) for these populations.
๐ต This is why it is super important to go by Blood markers & not use BMI/Weight as the sole metric to evaluate your health.
๐ต "My ideal weight as per BMI is... so I need to get there" is the wrong approach.
๐ต But, it is without a doubt a very useful tool for screening basic health among General population.
๐ต Anyone above or below the range is almost definitely Unhealthy (it's not like there are lots of bodybuilders walking around).
๐ต Those in the range should use other metrics to access their health
โ Fasting Insulin
โ Triglyceride/HDL ratio
โ HbA1C
โ Waist/Height Ratio
