I walked into the locker room, and there it was, displayed for everyone to see.

I was a wide-eyed freshman, a walk-on for the Army football team, and this was our first game week against Boston College.

On that pivotal Thursday of game week, they posted the travel roster in the locker room, and as I scanned the bulletin board, I couldn't help but notice my name noticeably absent.

For my inaugural college football game, I found myself sitting among the spectators in the stands. It was an overwhelming experience, a swirl of emotions that I had never encountered before.

The highs and lows of anticipation, excitement, and disappointment converged in that moment.

However, on the following Monday, my journey took a decisive turn.

I walked into the West Point Performance Psychology Department for my very first one-on-one meeting.

It was here that I truly began to appreciate and understand the crucial mental aspect of performance.

Once I fully embraced the mental component, my life underwent a profound transformation.

From that day forward, I never watched another game from the stands as a college football player...and 13 years later, I found myself in a leadership role at the West Point Center for Enhanced Performance, having the same breakthrough conversations with cadet athletes every day.
