I watched a total eclipse in Oregon in 2017 and, although I knew perfectly well what was happening, as the light faded, the temperature dropped and the birds fell silent, I began to understand why our ancestors looked to the heavens and found gods.

Tonight something rather wonderful is going to happen above Britain as the Moon moves across the face of the Sun.

Having experienced the real thing I can remember how extraordinarily spooky it felt. 👇
