If the principle by which we determine whether a practice is consistent with the apostolic faith is "are explicit divine promises in Scripture attached to it," there aren't enough such practices to be coherently Christian.

@bonesforsales I guess I don't understand why the objection would have anything to do with whether the doctrine is true or not. Plus, Catholics and Orthodox almost always pray "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" even when asking the intercession of the saints.
