IIT-M finds 'forever chemicals' groundwater in and around Perungudi dumpyard, Chembarambakkam lake and its treated water, Adyar river and Buckingham canal in #Chennai.

These chemicals are groups of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which can cause liver damage, low infant birth weights, hormonal imbalance, fertility issues, immune system effects, and even cancer.

They are called forever chemicals because they do not degrade or breakdown and are present almost always in the environment. Sources of 'forever chemicals' include non-stick cookware, cleaning agents, upholstery, food packaging, water/oil/stain resistant coatings, aqueous film-forming foam, waterproof materials like raincoats and cosmetics. These chemicals pollute water streams via sewage and solid waste.

Key findings of the study:
👉 Highest PFAS levels were found in groundwater 1km away from Perungudi dumpyard. That water had more toxicity than the dumpyard's groundwater.
👉 Adyar and Buckingham canal have PFAS because of untreated sewage discharge.
👉 Downstream Adyar had lesser PFAS than upstream Adyar because the former is diluted by Buckingham canal at the confluence point.
👉 Chembarambakkam lake also has PFAS due to polymer industries situated around it. The treated water, which goes to 40L people, has more PFAS than lake water.

@CPCB_OFFICIAL has not recognised these PFAS like the USA's @EPA to set safe levels and treatment guidelines.
