So the statutory resolution on Manipur president rule was passed in Lok Sabha at 3 am after a brief hour long debate, And then we ask why do states in North East and its people feel ‘alienated’ . Surely Manipur deserved an extended debate in both Houses of Parliament: over 260 people have died in last 23 months in ethnic violence. In any other part of the country this would be a major national story; in Manipur, it becomes a footnote. Why? 🙏

Strongly condemn the brutal attack on Christians in Jabalpur, MP. It is outrageous that Malayali priests were assaulted in the presence of the police while helping tribals, including women and children, who were falsely accused and detained. 82% of disabled people have NO health insurance! Our latest survey reveals a harsh truth: 42% of persons with disabilities haven't even heard of Ayushman Bharat. Only 28% have applied. Health insurance is a necessity, not a privilege. The government must remove income and age barriers to ensure healthcare access for all persons with disabilities. We strongly urge inclusion, accessibility, and accountability, ensuring Universal healthcare must be truly universal.

I was ready to introduce three Private Members' Bills today on important national issues. MPs are normally given opportunities every other Friday to introduce their Bills when Parliament is in session. But yet again, the item for private members' business was scrubbed from the Lok Sabha's Revised List of Business today, the Friday when it was due. There has been no Private Members' Business in the Lok Sabha since July 2024. Does Parliament exist only for the government to pursue its own agenda?

The last few days have offered an object lesson in how the news is “made“. @IndianExpress wanted to draw attention to their new Malayalam podcast, so they did two somewhat shameless things:

First, they took an innocuous statement (I said i had multiple “options to spend my time” in literary pursuits) and made a headline out of it in English that implied i was exploring other political options. And as usual, the rest of the media reacted to the headline and the political class reacted to the media, and I was left dealing with the mess!

The Income Tax Department appreciates taxpayers & tax professionals for timely compliance, resulting in a record surge in the filing of Income Tax Returns (ITRs).

Here are the key highlights:

👉More than 7.28 crore ITRs for AY 2024-25 filed till 31st July, 2024, a 7.5% increase from the 6.77 crore ITRs for AY 2023-24 filed in the corresponding period in the preceding year.

👉Around 72% of taxpayers opted for the New Tax Regime, with 5.27 crore ITRs filed under it, compared to 2.01 crore under the Old Tax Regime.

👉Over 69.92 lakh ITRs were filed on 31st July, 2024, with the highest hourly rate of 5.07 lakh filings between 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm.

👉Over 3.2 crore successful logins on 31st July, 2024.

👉About 58.57 lakh ITRs were received from first-time filers, indicating a widening of tax base.

👉ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-4, and ITR-6 were available from 1st April, 2024, with ITR-3 and ITR-5 released earlier than in previous years.

👉About 10.64 lakh queries handled by the e-filing Helpdesk team.

👉Resolution also provided through ORM on X(Twitter), handling 1.07 lakh e-mails between 1st April to 31st July, 2024, resolving 99.97% of the issues raised.

@SmitaSabharwal Ma'am, with the support of technology, disabled persons also are able to perform tasks on par with non-disabled, even if it's the AIS. Issue here is identification of persons who use it fraudulently which can be dealt with the right induction procedures.

Kartik has been on a wheelchair for the past 14 years due to a 90% muscular dystrophy disability, yet he has not received a service allocation in the last 4 years.

It is disheartening to see that those who are physically fit but have money, power, and connections have taken the opportunities that rightfully belong to deserving candidates like Kartik.

This raises a critical question for the government: How long will the system continue to overlook the hard work of individuals? When will merit truly be the sole criteria ?
