Trump says TSMC will invest $300 billion in the US
1. TSMC's officially announced investment is $165 billion, while Trump previously stated $200 billion. His further escalation to $300 billion seems to be laying the groundwork for upcoming semiconductor tariffs, consistent with his stated approach of "starting with an extremely high number, then negotiating down."
2. Recent market rumors suggest that during US-Taiwan tariff negotiations, Trump/the US demanded TSMC take a 49% stake in Intel or invest an additional $400 billion. However, my understanding is that US-Taiwan tariff negotiations have not involved TSMC. Trump's unilateral statement about TSMC investing $300 billion in the US also validates my view - if needed, the US government can make unilateral statements or approach TSMC directly.
3. If the aforementioned market rumors were true, TSMC would need to invest a total of $565 billion in the US, far exceeding Trump's stated $300 billion, indicating these market rumors are unfounded.
4. Some US government officials previously did consider TSMC taking a stake as one of multiple potential options for revitalizing Intel. However, as the US government has gained a better understanding of Intel's actual challenges, and following current CEO Lip-Bu Tan taking office, such voices have significantly diminished.

Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon says that AI can draft 95% of an S1 IPO prospectus “in minutes” (a job that used to require a 6-person team multiple weeks).
“The last 5% now matters because the rest is now a commodity,” per Solomon.
Finance Bill 2024 is out:
· There's a clear effort in the bill to lean more towards Appropriations in Aid than we have seen in preceding Finance Bills
· Medium-term Revenue Strategy promised us a clean up of VAT exemptions & zero rating, the bill goes heavy on this
· There's a proposal to exempt KRA from the constraints of the Data Protection Act in accessing tax payers' data
· There are a number of good proposals, there are a number of problematic proposals - it's a mixed bag in my view
