I am pleased that the union has paid tribute to someone I learnt so much from. Neil Sharp was a Sociologist, a Trade Unionist, and someone I will not forget. I am proud to have played a part in pulling together how we have much to learn from his legacy:

Just had a meeting with the Dean of my Faculty alongside the Head of Employee Relations... Apparently I am under official investigation for writing a blog about how bad universities are at marketing. You literally couldn't make this stuff up.

@soppystern This post - and the other comments - indicate a sad state of affairs. Written communications (hard copies!) and the post are still important.

I was very frustrated in London a few years ago when I wanted a stamp, but I could only buy an international one for a postcard 🤦

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

@davenellist @ericsegal86 You surely can’t be supporting the attacks on teachers and headteachers that have taken place?

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

Teachers and Headteachers in France should be able to go to work and come back safe and sound.

Shame on all those protesters who have been attacking the educators.

Watched the debate at #TUC26 about “Wages not Weapons” - an interesting discussion

While there are some trade unionists sticking up for jobs in the defence industry, there’s almost no-one standing up for gambling jobs. Here’s something I wrote on this:

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

In the next few days, @The_TUC and trade unions will discuss what’s going on in the world. In the gambling industry, thousands of jobs are being lost, but there is no outrage. Here’s something I wrote on this issue. We should be fighting these job cuts
https://t.co/A2QaaiAUxQ

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

It’s frustrating to see no trade union defence of the thousands of jobs being lost in the gambling sector. There’s silence or indifference, at best.

I wrote this to say we should be standing up to defend them:

[Hilary Salt @RedActuary]

Sharon Graham, Unite's general secretary: “Death by a thousand cuts has been going on under the nose of successive governments. Years of underinvestment, unsustainable zero-emission mandates and high industrial energy costs are crippling the industry. There must be further action.”
Well said @UniteSharon @unitetheunion . JLR doesn’t need a hand out, it needs the handcuffs of high energy costs and imposed EV targets removing

Staff at the University of Cumbria have accused their institution of “fire and rehire” practices, as it looks to lower its pension costs #highered #pensions

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

It’s pretty outrageous that the University of Cumbria has attacked staff pensions over the summer, and now considers firing and re-hiring those that haven’t accepted. More here👇

[UCU Northern Region @UCUNorthern]

.@ucu has warned that University of Cumbria staff face the threat of 'fire and rehire' as the university begins a process to move workers from the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) into a significantly less secure pension arrangement.

This is an excellent article by @jgro_the on the Jason Arday story.

It shows what can be done by good journalism.

Hats off to him for his research and for writing this, and I’m pleased that @timeshighered have made it available to all.

The University of Sunderland gave me the qualification to teach in further education, and was the institution where several of my family members have also studied.

It is not good to hear that they are making this change, which risks their reputation as an employer.

UCU warns that employing staff via a subsidiary will create “two-tier” workforce and save University of Sunderland only £36,000.

It’s a fairly standard thing to apologise after you make a mistake, especially if you say it was a mistake.

Refusing to apologise because you don’t like the individual that you are apologising to, or the circumstances in which this takes place, is immature.

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

Let’s see if Andy Burnham and Lucy Powell can do more for the education sector than Keir Starmer and Bridget Phillipson.

There are some easy wins available. Let’s see if they take them.

Top trolling by Teesside University, right next to Northumbria University

[Jon Bryan @jonbryan]

Pleased to be in Middlesbrough to be part of this protest. The University of Teesside needs to change the way it is doing things and listen to the staff

10 years ago, the polls closed and the votes started to be counted. What a brilliant night that was. The people had spoken!

I’m not sure if @StigAbell and @KateEMcCann from @TimesRadio are still collecting ‘BS phrases’ or ‘HR/Management speak’, but I had a new one today. A consultation where FAQs are going to be updated once a week, we were told that:

‘Wednesday will be the heartbeat day’
