365 days ago, our landlords asked @saanich for a demolition permit so they could force us to move. Since then, we were evicted twice, lived in 4 homes, & had to move our children between 6 schools
The rental has been here all that time.
This is NOT what housing ppl looks like.
We vacated this rental at 4211 Quadra earlier this year. But it's still around today, even though our landlords told @Saanich they would demolish it 305 days ago. They could have housed ppl until today. Instead, we are all still desperately looking for housing after our eviction
@zacdevries Does the QMP require developers to replace every rental on the corridor? If not, many of these young people still be left without housing, and the few that are housed may lose their homes
@ColinPlant2022 The remarkable thing about this hearing was that pretty much everyone in attendance spoke out both for *and* against the QMP for the same reason: "it will lower property value".
I hope they're right.
A timely reminder: last time removed trustees took the district to court, instead of prioritizing "student safety", @sd61schools paid lawyers $624,046 of student $ (3x the available budget, which had already double year over year since 2020 to encourage such nonsense). They lost.
Currently watching back Monday's @sd61schools Ops meeting & can't miss the district overspend on legal (52,480 just last month alone, no doubt earmarked for @HarrisCoLLP's unnecessary efforts to dismember our elected board). 1/2 a million $ wasted already. https://t.co/Ae5DmlOXdR
@LynneBlockMLA@vicpdcanada Who will pay the district's legal fees after the district/province inevitably lose yet another case in court against these trustees? Will this funding come once *again* from the @sd61schools budget to the detriment of so-called "student safety"? https://t.co/W0NCFTyRMH
Sorry, that should read 200k ($208,817, to be exact). Meanwhile, since cutting strings to "save" the district money the district presumably wouldn't otherwise have, @sd61schools then paid $198,470 (already $144,465 over budget) to lawyers. In 2 months! 🧐 https://t.co/U7xgh9hbYD
@vicpdcanada Also worth pointing out the history of violence in schools under Sherri Bell's leadership & later SPLO involvement. The precedent here was a disaster for students. But an elected & competent board can change this culture, not police https://t.co/aeMfFYb4Q5
https://t.co/O7SPh57t8z
The decision to replace trustee(s) undemocratically is beyond the pale & has *nothing* to do with policing or safety. (Remember: political efforts to remove members of the current @sd61schools board predate this issue & have already harmed students).
We recognize that Minister Beare had a difficult decision to make regarding SD61, and we respect and appreciate that she listened to all the voices in the conversation, and prioritized student safety.
We look forward to working with Trustee Bell on a safety plan that will meet the news and concerns of four communities, while keeping our schools and students safe.
A statement from the Victoria City Police Union regarding today’s SD61 Announcement:
@timescolonist The last time this happened, the removed trustees took the district to court and won, the SC justice ordered @sd61schools to pay their legal fees, the fees vastly exceeded the legal budget (& all legal fees from the previous decade) & student programs lost funding. So I disagree
@Dean_Murdock One of the building permits @Saanich issued in 2023 authorized my landlord to illegally and unnecessarily evict us and many other tenants from an 8 BR rental. The property has been vacant ever since, and as a result, many of us no longer call #Saanich home
@jwsthomson only every time I ask @saanich for literally anything.
"Tell me where I can find the map with zoning for Saanich addresses": FOI request. "Do you have the minutes for last month's council meeting?": FOI request. "Who do I talk to about a tree in my backyard?": FOI request.🤫
@KahlonRav I've been waiting since last year for a decision after the RTB was unable to schedule a hearing before an unfair and entirely avoidable eviction. Why do hearings for monetary orders take twice as long to resolve than other participatory hearings?
@izedzedy yeah but I need my renters to pay me even more so I can afford all the properties I won't personally use for any reason other than collecting even higher rent from even more desperate renters
