When Steve interned at the City’s Traffic Engineering Department in the late 80s, this was one of his first assignments: investigate profanity on street signs.

This particular sign had been installed on the wrong corner, facing the wrong direction.

These signs were supposed to be placed at the top of a hill to warn unsuspecting downhill motorists, not drivers about to head uphill.

Jokingly, he suggested leaving it. His boss agreed.

His crew would clean the sign, and it would get tagged again and again. After a few months, it was finally relocated to the correct corner, the northeast corner of Jones and Filbert, facing northbound.
