@Seanyboyhmfc @MrRoryReid Do people who buy new ICE cars have a spare 30K to pay upfront? No they lease or finance them, just like most people do with most cars of all engine types. The point is that the little extra you may pay, you could save that in fuel and maintenance against a comparable ICE car.

@robert21collier Yep sounds about right - it's expensive to be poor, people less able to get cheap credit etc. 13,000 cars under 2k on autotrader currently, filter it to EVs and all types of hybrid - just 25! So poorest will be stuck with the highest running costs for long time to come

@robert21collier @KateFantom How cheap does a second hand EV with decent range, lets say 175miles+, need to be before it would be viable for poorer people do you think? Currently you can get one for about £10k, but dropping all the time. At what price is an EV cheap enough for 'all'?

@EpicWinningMaz My 5 year old e+ Tekna battery SOH is 94 or so, though only 14000 miles on it as previous owner appeared not to like driving too much! Rapid charging required so rarely that chademo availability almost a non-issue - if In doubt, aim for Osprey, InstaVolt or MFG!

@hugo_griffiths @geake So you don't concede at all that the amount that people believe them to be not as good is influenced by factors other than a purely rational assessment of the facts? I've given you a specific example of that being the case.

@hugo_griffiths @geake Maybe so - but all I can go on is my own discussions with people, and hearing a vast amount of fear, uncertainty and doubt that comes from somewhere, but doesn't correlate with either my own actual (5 yrs) experience OR the facts of their life as I understand them.

@hugo_griffiths @geake And that's what annoys me - people's perceptions of their needs and how they'd be inconvenienced by switching to EV are often incorrect. Everyone imagines worst case scenario as daily life - primed, I would argue, by an efficient media campaign from the fossil fuel lobby.

@hugo_griffiths @geake Indeed. I'll give you an example from my own life - father in law, commutes 40 miles a day, doesn't enjoy driving long distances at all. Most *years* go by without a longer journey than 180 miles. House with a driveway. Won't consider an EV as 'the infrastructure isn't there'.

@geake @hugo_griffiths And the reduced poullution/cost savings/ reliability doesn't appeal at all? It just seems so obvious that as it would cause zero inconvenience to the majority of drivers, 95%+ of the time, on balance, that makes it a better technology, not for all, but for most.

@ShropsAeroPig @JamesDeroest If you can find me an example of someone losing their job directly because they refused to buy an electric car, I will be astounded. Do you mean low emissions zones in built up areas incentivising adoption of cleaner/newer vehicles? If so I don't think that really counts...

@ShropsAeroPig @JamesDeroest Yes - I see that manufacturers are being slowly forced to stop selling new ICE cars. I would contend that's a bit different from consumers being forced to buy EVs - might it not encourage people to keep existing cars on road for longer, if they prefer to stick with ICE for now?

@ShropsAeroPig @JamesDeroest Who is forcing anyone to scrap a working vehicle and buy an EV? You will be able to buy a new car with a combustion engine in 10 years time. You will likely be able to buy secondhand ones for at least 10 years after that.
