Good news. I’ve brokered a deal between local residents and South West Water to close two private raw sewage outlets polluting #Plymouth Sound.
I don’t just talk about stopping sewage. I take action to stop sewage.
These two private outfalls should be closed by Christmas.
#OTD 1998. National Minimum Wage receives Royal Assent
Despite predictions that it would cost millions of jobs, the act ensures a minimum rate of pay in Britain for first time.

Its been a very good year so far for this winning @PlymouthLabour team. Five by-elections - 2 holds, 2 gains from Tories and no lost seats. And we also contested 19 wards in May's elections, winning 15 out of 19 contests, gaining 7 seats. And taking control of the City Council.
Just now I am in charge of 2 Telex machines in the Communications section with my own secretary. You learn quite a lot e.g. £12m is to be spent modernising Devonport so that it will be able to handle Nuclear subs, Leander class frigates, & the new type 21 & 22 frigates.
Good morning!

@PlymouthLabour is the only opposition party that can win a majority here. It’s time to close down the Tory carnival of chaos.
Dear @JohnnyMercerUK & @garystreeterSWD
Please vote to stop the Tory sewage scandal today. Labour’s motion requires mandatory monitoring of sewage outlets, automatic penalties for dumping sewage & a legally binding target. Plymouth is watching.
Yours sincerely,
@PlymouthLabour
I’m speaking in the Commons later in the debate on sewage.
We need to end routine raw sewage discharges into our rivers, lakes and seas.
The Tories won’t, but Labour will.
As an employment lawyer in a previous life, I’m really proud of Labour’s Employment Bill which we have pledged to bring in within the first 100 days of the next Labour government to give working people rights, choices and security.

Why did the Conservatives - the party who chopped down 100+ trees in Plymouth city centre only weeks ago - refuse to attend the Plymouth climate hustings for the local elections?

Brilliant to see Dave Trigger back as a Councillor candidate for Ivybridge East, for election on May 4th. Not just a different tractor. Dave will make a very different Councillor, and is just what is needed! #SouthHamsBranchLabourParty
The Tories have brought in photo ID for the local elections.
Millions of people are likely to be denied the chance to vote.
The way round this blatant voter suppression is to vote by post.
But time’s running out. The deadline is 18 April.

Plymouth City Council proverb: "The best time to chop a tree down is late at night..." https://t.co/SjlpcA37r3
Our city centre has now lost its green lung. It will take decades for the trees promised to replace the ones we lost to grow. We are in a climate and nature emergency and fewer trees is not the answer. https://t.co/UzYkz5ndqn
Awful, awful scenes. Luke is right.
I and so many others grew up with these trees as part of our childhood. Last night the Conservatives ripped out part of the green soul of Plymouth.
