A developer trained an AI agent in simulation and deployed it onto a real robotic air hockey table using reinforcement learning.

This robot can track the puck with millimeter-level accuracy and react in roughly 20 milliseconds, fast enough to challenge even skilled human players.

We’re moving from robots that follow programmed rules to machines that learn strategies in simulation and execute them in the physical world.

One way to do this:

Train a second model to identify discrete concepts, then monitor the concepts' interactions over time.

Anthropic's "circuit tracing" technique trains a "replacement" model to sparsely recreate a base model's MLP layers' outputs.

This effectively decomposes the base model's activations into a set of sparse features. It can be shown that these sparse features correspond to high-level concepts that humans can identify, like "Texas" or "the Olympics"

BREAKING: Google is planning to release 32 million mosquitoes across Florida and California.

The company has asked the EPA for permission to proceed, with the public given until June 5 to respond.

The mosquitoes are infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which stops them from reproducing and slowly collapses the wild population from within.

Google's previous Debug Project trial in California's Central Valley nearly eliminated mosquitoes from three test sites entirely. A separate trial in Singapore cut dengue cases by 70% within 12 months.

Google has now released over 1 billion mosquitoes across four continents. This new proposal is the largest deployment in US history.
