In my opinion, this show has an opportunity to say that there's something as good as, or even better about being Asian, something to be proud of. But I feel strongly that will only happen if they keep Luo Ji Chinese, and not recast his race.
Luo Ji on Netflix's Three Body Problem needs to be Chinese. What is brilliant about Luo Ji is he subverts the American savior trope. A Chinese guy overcomes his flaws to save the world with philosophy and authenticity. Let a Chinese guy save the world. #threebodyproblem
As an Asian American, I feel American media has often represented Asianness as inferior. It's always a non-Asian person who is the savior, or if it's an Asian person, they save the world because they adopt whiteness. A notable example of not this is Killing Eve.
Ok but did you know that Moses broke the very first Yom Kippur fast with a digital sketch comedy show? Be like Moses and tune into @boogiemanja at 9pm ET! https://t.co/shKutpT1Y0
If you’re adapting a Japanese novel, but and you’re making everyone white, then you gotta change the setting to somewhere white. I’m tired of Asian people being mood setters and set pieces.
