Don't worry if your resident hedgehog comes out to splat outside her house during the day.
Healthy hogs may come out from their nest for a breather on very hot days, but will always stay nearby in the shade, under cover.
Hedgehogs only have sweat pores on the skin of their tummy, where blood flow is closest to the surface.
Splatting - laying their tummy on a cool surface - will lower the temperature of the passing blood, thus cooling the hedgehog.
Leaving a dish of water in the border, tucked under the shrubbery, will make it safer and easier for them to stay hydrated.❤️

❤️🦔 Meet Keto who self admitted to hedgehog hospital 🦔❤️ #hedgehog

This dear little baby is Keto.
He's in a very sorry state, suffering from malnutrition, ringworm and a broken leg.
But he managed to get himself not only here, to the hospital, to admit himself for help, but he actually hobbled into the winter cabin and the pen where Anya and her 5 babies are still living.
Perhaps he was looking for a mummy, too.🥹
He started tucking into the family's food, while Anya's babies gathered round him, busily self anointing with his odd new smell.
Then he got into bed with them, for the first comfy sleep I imagine he's had for a long time.
I only noticed him on the pen CCTV when he came out to eat again, and saw not only was 'one of Anya's babies' limping badly, but was half the size of all the others!
Keto is the same age as Anya's babies, but is half their size at only 370g.
The break in his leg is stable and should heal well, now he has some good pain relief, but his poor skin is in a terrible state from malnutrition.
As he's not skinny, just small, I would imagine someone has been feeding him with either a so-called 'hedgehog food', or a cat food that doesn't have meat as the first ingredient.
Hedgehogs can't process cereals, so if that's the first and main ingredient, they can't extract any nourishment from it, and will literally starve, even while eating their fill.
When food lacks absorbable nutrients, the body saves what it has left for the heart and brain, starving the skin and hair follicles.
Fur and spines are made of protein - without it spines become brittle, fall out easily, and fail to regrow.
And essential fatty acids keep skin moist and elastic, so a shortage leads to dry, flaky skin and matting fur.
And in a fatal domino effect, this poor nutrition lowers immune defences, making the hedgehog prone to skin infections, internal parasites and mites.
Keto is now happy and snug in his own hospital bed, getting the treatment and diet he needs.
As for Anya's babies - I just hope Keto's smell was all they took away with them.🤞

Do you remember this sound from your childhood?👂
This is the sound of gardens not being regimented, of borders left to nature, of edges not being strimmed into sterile 'neatness'.
Isn't it lovely?
The click and buzz of beetles, the chirruping of grasshoppers - all the insects that love to live on the peripherals.
This behaviour is called thigmotaxis, meaning they feel safer touching vertical surfaces and making their home in the boundaries.
So even if you enjoy a bowling green smooth cut lawn, please leave the edges for the insects.
The borders and fence margins are precious to these insects because these transitional zones provide an ideal mix of warm sun exposure, shelter, and abundant food.
And they, in turn, provide food for our endangered hedgehogs.
This is just my front garden.
A small space in the grand scheme of things.
Yet it contains a whole world of life and hope.

As we enter yet another week of drought conditions please, I beg you, put out water for the animals.
Our nocturnal wildlife is dying of thirst.
A terrible, painful way to die.
And you hold the solution, the cure.
A turn of the tap will save a life.🚰
So get out your casserole pot lids, your flan dishes, your old baking trays - anything that is shallow and wide and not easily tipped.
It doesn't matter what it looks like, this is an emergency.
Put them out at dusk, front and back garden.
Your local charity shop will have loads of suitable water dishes - so with one simple act of kindness you can benefit so many.🥰
Keep them clean.
Keep them full.
Keep them coming.

Today was my last immunotherapy following 18mths of chemo, surgery & radiotherapy 💕 Signed off by Consultant & told to get on with life now. No follow ups, no monitoring, just get back to normal 🤷‍♀️ Like a revolving door method 😞#tnbc
