This is the Barnett effect, experimentally demonstrated by Samuel Jackson Barnett in 1915.
In a frame rotating with the material, the energy contains the coupling

where Ω is the angular velocity of the body and J is the microscopic angular momentum inside the material.
Rotation changes the relative energies of different angular-momentum orientations. Because magnetic moment and angular momentum are related by

the rotation acts on microscopic magnetic moments like an effective magnetic field:
B(Barnett) = Ω/γ
For a weakly magnetic, linear material, the induced magnetization in SI units is approximately
M = χΩ/(μ₀γ)
with its direction depending on the sign of the gyromagnetic ratio γ.
This is not ordinary magnetism produced by rotating net electric charge. The Barnett field is an effective field arising from the coupling between mechanical rotation and microscopic angular momentum.
The inverse phenomenon is the Einstein–de Haas effect: change the magnetization of a freely suspended body, and the body can begin to rotate as angular momentum is exchanged between microscopic magnetic moments and the material as a whole.
In 2019, researchers observed a nuclear version of the Barnett effect by rotating water at frequencies up to 13.5 kHz and detecting a change in proton polarization using nuclear magnetic resonance.
Rotation and magnetism may appear to be completely different physical phenomena.
At a deeper level, both are governed by angular momentum.
