NEW: San Diego man fatally shot by police after setting K-9 on fire inside adult store

San Diego police responded September 16 to reports of a man smashing car windows with a metal rod.

Saul Sandoval Chavez, 33, fled on foot and barricaded himself inside the Adult Emporium on 30th Street in North Park while armed with a blowtorch and flammable liquid.

Officers tried to negotiate.

After he refused to exit, they deployed K-9 Ryder.

Chavez ignited the device, setting the dog on fire. As he advanced toward the door still carrying the incendiary, Officer Kyle Lehr fired, striking him.

Ryder was treated and is expected to recover.
