Seen a phrase a lot that I really dislike. "White mediocrity".

There's lot of white mediocrity at elite universities, apparently. I've certainly met mediocre white students and professors in some of these places (I'm sure some felt the same about me!). But there's just no mention of class. You think mediocre kids of white bricklayers, midwives and bus drivers are running the show at Oxford, Cambridge, LSE and UCL? You can't miss them - they're everywhere!

Actually those people wire our electrics, fix our plumbing, maintain our roads, deliver our children - there's nothing mediocre about them.

Class politics hasn't died, as some people say. It literally can't, because we live in a society shaped by class. But sadly it seems to have disappeared as a category for some progressives.

Scottish nationalists, like many of the Irish are pathetic. A history of Celtic excellence, trotting the globe doing the unthinkable, trying to act like beaten down serfs when they founded entire Dominions and whole ass nations.

What the actual fuck are you talking about? Scottish settlement, development and governance of Canada alone is insurmountable.

When the British conquered Quebec in 1763; it was Scottish merchants who set up shop in Montreal. John Molson, James McGill, John Redpath, Simon Frobisher and Mactavish, bringing the Industrial Revolution to Canada.

They founded Molson Breweries, banking and industries. McGill founded McGill university, and the first hospital. Simon Frobisher and Mactavish built the North West Company, chief competitor to the Hudson’s Bah Company

The first steamships, industry and large scale commercial banking and trade, leadership over the construction of the Lachine canal which allowed for goods to be shipped up and down the St. Lawrence River to the rest of Canada was done by Scots. Intermarrying with French Canadians, and creating some of Canada’s most powerful elites.

Settling the Canadian Province of Nova Scotia (New Scotland), whose flag is an inverted St. Andrew’s Cross with the Scottish royal standard in the centre.

The Royal Bank of Canada was founded in 1864, now the largest corporation in Canada by William Cunard, a Halifax, Nova Scotia merchant and son of the Scottish settler.

The Bank of Montreal, founded by nine Scottish merchants in Canada, chiefly John Richardson and John Forsyth, and their associates George Garden, James Leslie, Robert Armour, and George Moffatt.

Sir John A. Macdonald, the chief Father of Confederation, who united the Dominion of Canada, and served as its first prime minister along with George Brown, James Ferrier, Alexander Tilloch Galt, Oliver Mowat, Charles Tupper and Adams George Archibald were all Scottish men involved in Confederation. The Scottish government itself recognizes Macdonald, Brown and Galt.
