Black Myth: Wukong put the Monkey King and Journey to the West on the global map — but did you know China has another classic called Journey to the East?

Inside it are eight ordinary people who trained their way to immortality. No divine bloodlines, just pure grind. They’re the Eight Immortals — China’s most down-to-earth immortal squad.

With the animated film All Wishes Come True packing theaters, their stories are blowing up again. Here’s why they hit different:

🔵 The stories of the Eight Immortals were finalized in the Ming dynasty novel Journey to the East. What makes them special is that they aren’t perfect, lofty gods from the start. They were regular people who cultivated themselves into immortals. As the old saying goes, the Eight Immortals represent eight kinds of life—men and women, young and old, rich and poor. Pretty much anyone can find a bit of themselves in one of them.

In the usual order, the eight are:

🔵 Iron-Crutch Li (Li Tieguai) heads the group. He looks like a crippled beggar, leaning on an iron crutch and carrying a big gourd on his back filled with life-saving elixir. He stands for compassion earned through hardship and poverty.

🔵 Zhongli Quan (Han Zhongli) is the big-bellied, bare-chested older guy who waves a banana-leaf fan said to be able to revive the dead. He was once a general in the Eastern Han dynasty. He represents the wealthy and powerful who let go of fame and fortune to seek the Dao.

🔵 Zhang Guolao is the white-bearded old man who loves riding a paper donkey backward. That donkey can travel a thousand miles a day. He embodies the wisdom of aging gracefully and returning to simplicity.

🔵 Lü Dongbin is the most famous of the bunch—the elegant swordsman-scholar whose sword can slay demons. He represents masculine talent and spiritual resolve, and he’s the one with the most stories in folklore.

🔵 He Xiangu is the only woman among them. She holds a lotus flower and remains pure even in muddy waters. Originally an ordinary farm girl, she became immortal after eating a magical fruit by chance. She shows that women, too, can attain the highest spiritual fruit.

🔵 Lan Caihe is the androgynous street performer who carries a flower basket and sings all day. The flowers in that basket can heal the sick. He represents carefree joy even in poverty.

🔵 Han Xiangzi is the handsome young musician who plays a transverse flute whose sound can make all things grow. He’s said to be the grandnephew of the great Tang writer Han Yu, and he stands for youthful talent and spiritual sensitivity.

🔵 Cao Guojiu wears official robes and holds a jade tablet. He was the younger brother of a Song dynasty empress—a genuine imperial relative. He represents the privileged person who wakes up, abandons rank, and seeks immortality.

These eight include a beggar, a general, a scholar, a musician, a farm girl, and an imperial relative. None of them were born divine. They achieved immortality through cultivation and kindness.

That’s what moves Chinese people most about them: becoming an immortal has nothing to do with your background.

Anyone can change their fate.

Better open models create more applications.
More applications create more demand.
More demand means more chips, more compute, and more data centers.

The analyst also dismantled the lazy attempt to equate “Chinese open source” with cybersecurity backdoors.

Open-source software can be inspected, tested, challenged, and repaired by anyone. Its code is exposed to scrutiny rather than hidden behind corporate walls.

The analyst understood technology and business.
