Yesterday I spoke at my high school, Noordgesig Secondary’s award ceremony. It was heavy & triggering. I used to go to school on an empty stomach get back home and still there won’t be food.

My economics teacher, Mr Jacobs, would sometimes buy me lunch. The school didn’t have a nutrition programme at the time. He was my Hope Giver. So were my aunts.

Like these children, I too stood in front as the third best performing grade 11 pupil and then the 2nd best performing matriculant. My point is, we need more Hope Givers. We can’t give up on humanity.
