On behalf of the entire Kearney Police Department, we extend our sincere condolences, prayers, and love to the Lewis family. We were all shocked and saddened to learn of the unexpected passing of our friend and brother, Retired Lieutenant Dennis Lewis, on October 9, 2023. ⚫️🔵⚫️🇺🇸
Lieutenant Lewis was a 2nd generation Law Enforcement Officer, beginning his career with the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office in 1980 as a Jailer, becoming a Deputy Sheriff in 1982 through 1988. In 1988 Lieutenant Lewis joined the Kearney Police Department where he served as a Police Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, and Lieutenant. He served in many other assignments to include Field Training Officer and Criminal Investigator. Lieutenant Lewis attended the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command in 1998, Session 121.
Lieutenant Lewis retired after a 35 year career of dedicated service to the City of Kearney Nebraska Government in 2018.
His father, Edward "Bud" Lewis retired from KPD in 1981 as an Assistant Chief of Police and his son, Robert Lewis was a Police Officer with KPD from 2008 - 2014.
"Myself and the entire Kearney Police Department offer support, love, and genuine care to the entire Lewis family and friends during this difficult time. It will be our duty and honor to recognize the service and dedication of Retired Lieutenant Dennis Lewis, #321, along with a thankful community. May he rest in peace." - Chief Bryan D. Waugh
