@luptonbeers Two innings giving up a 7 spot and an 8 spot in the same game and I counted no less than a dozen players more interested in their family and girlfriends immediately after the game...they weren't even phased by that embarrassing effort or aware of how bad the optics of this were.

Dear coaches who insist on calling pitches from the dugout:

• You should be checking in with your starting pitcher after their pre game bullpen to see how they are feeling. What they feel comfortable with and how everything else is feeling. (Just because the scouting report calls for something, doesn’t mean it’s what’s best for the pitcher on the mound that day.)
• Make sure you are aware of all the different pitches your pitchers throw (yes this has to be said).
• You should be finding time to discuss pitch selection with your pitcher and catcher on the why, when and how. (Coach = Teacher)
• If your pitcher is struggling with FB command, make sure to utilize their off speed, don’t keep throwing FB’s hoping it comes back. (Pitching 101)
• Make sure you are teaching them what it means to be UN-predictable with pitch selection. Stay away from patterns. (Remember, you’re calling pitches because you know better, so we would expect for you to not be predictable with what you call too.)
• Recognize what’s working for your pitchers that day, don’t just call pitches based of a scouting report. (Communicate with them and use your eyes to see what they are throwing better that day. Stop only looking at the “report.”)
• Find time to give them the reins. Give them opportunities to use what they are learning. (Or better yet, let them do it all the time and then go from there with teaching.)

Don’t forget too, if you’re smart enough to call pitches from the dugout then you are smart enough to teach THEM how to do it too. Realize most pitchers and catchers love this part of the game. Teach them and then let THEM play.
