"Beyond being a proud moment for the city, the successful effort to rename Taney Street is a reminder that things can change. And that, like LeCount and Catto, we should work toward a brighter and fairer future."

After nearly five years of advocacy by the @Rename_Taney Coalition, @CouncilmemberKJ with @PHLCouncil and extensive community debate, we are proud to announce a street renaming to replace the name of U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, infamous for the 1857 Dred Scott decision that denied citizenship to African Americans, with Caroline LeCount, a Philadelphia Civil Rights pioneer and educator.
Caroline LeCount was the first black woman to pass Philadelphia’s teaching exam and worked as a trailblazing principal in the late 19th Century, working alongside her partner Octavius Catto in the fight for desegregation and equality in education and public services.
I am proud to commemorate the life, legacy, and contributions of Caroline LeCount to our great City through this historic street renaming.
Change starts with each of us. Like Caroline LeCount, we must step into our calling—no matter how small we feel, we are mighty. 💪 Philly is renaming Taney St to honor her legacy.
Jalen Hurts post SB:
“We came up short. I think the beautiful part about it is everyone experiences different pains, everyone experiences different agonies of life, but you decide if you want to learn from it. You decide if you want that to be a teachable moment. I know I do.”
Why is it so hard to rename Taney Street? Here's a look at a dedicated group of citizens working to expose the racist history of the street's name and change it to something new.

Thanks to @TrenaeNuri and @citycastphilly for discussing the campaign to @Rename_Taney → LeCount and making a better, more inclusive Philadelphia.

While it's important to know our past, we ought not place those who sought to divide our nation in a place of honor.
Today, the House voted to remove a bust of Roger Taney—the Justice who wrote the court decision declaring Black people weren't US citizens—from the US Capitol.
went and translated that zelensky selfie video from the streets of kyiv, just to know what he was actually saying in response to the russian reports that he had fled -- so here it is for the rest of you, plus this music naturally felt right. enjoy.
