Jim Heinitz coached football, but his players left with lessons they used their whole lives.

He faithfully served Augustana football for more than 20 years and became the Vikings’ all-time winningest coach. His legacy at the Sioux Falls university was cememted when the Vikings named the football field at Kirkeby-Over Stadium in Heinitz’s honor.

Heinitz and his teams not only won North Central Conference titles, but the Mountain Lake (MN) native played in that conference. Heinitz was an All-NCC linebacker for South Dakota State in 1971 after overcoming numerous injuries.
