that was another time, another man, a different vision, a different philosophical approach.
Times have changed now.
Proud to be a citizen of America's 51st state. 🇺🇸
Hail our new Viceroy Ambassador Brent T. Christensen. The British East India Company ruled and devastated our region for nearly 200 years. Hopefully, the USA will do the same; two years and still counting.
This is what Congresswoman @RepGraceMeng said in a recent interview with @bdnews24com regarding the ongoing ban on the activities of the #AwamiLeague in #Bangladesh:
“If individual actors have broken the law, they should be held accountable, but banning a full-fledged political party is a matter of concern and can weaken the democratic process. Political differences should be resolved through political and constitutional processes in a democracy.”
Congresswoman Meng has long been involved with the Bangladesh Caucus, an informal bipartisan group of members of the U.S. House of Representatives that works to strengthen Bangladesh–U.S. relations.
On May 12, 2025, the Interim Govt led by Muhammad #Yunus suspended the activities of Bangladesh's largest secular political party, the Awami League, through an executive order issued under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), 2009, without any judicial process.
Following the formation of the new government, the #BNP-led administration retained this decision by passing legislation in Parliament, thereby giving statutory effect to a measure that jurists and rights activists have described as undemocratic and legally contentious.
Since May 2025, thousands of Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters have reportedly been detained under the broad powers of the Anti-Terrorism Act, a law which makes even online expressions of support for the party a criminal offence.

This @bbcbangla report examined the events surrounding the June 22 incident at Ashulia Ghat on the Turag River, where supporters of the banned #AwamiLeague reportedly came under pursuit after holding a procession marking the party's 77th founding anniversary.
The report is based on interviews with eyewitnesses, police, relatives of the deceased, and an Awami League participant.
The Incident
On 22 June, approximately 60–65 Awami League activists gathered for a procession commemorating the party's anniversary. According to one participant interviewed by BBC Bangla, the group planned to disperse by boarding a trawler on the Turag River in order to avoid arrest while leaving the area.
The participant alleged that after the trawler reached Ashulia Ghat, police and civilians in plan clothes attacked the group. He claimed the activists were chased, prompting many to flee in different directions, with some jumping into the river. According to his account:
- Seven activists initially went missing after entering the water.
- Seven others were arrested by police.
- Three of the missing were later found dead.
- The remaining four are believed by party members to be alive, although they were initially unaccounted for.
The participant requested anonymity, saying he himself escaped by jumping into the river and remains in hiding.
Claims by Arrested Activists
The lawyer representing the seven arrested activists told BBC Bangla that his clients alleged that information about the procession had been leaked beforehand. Police and local activists of #BNP and #JamaatEIslami chased and assaulted the AL activists after the trawler docked.
Some activists jumped into the river while attempting to escape. Stones were allegedly thrown at people who had entered the water.
An anonymous eyewitness also told BBC Bangla that he saw stones being thrown at people near Ashulia Ghat, although he left shortly afterwards because of fear.
Two local BNP leaders approached by BBC Bangla denied that their party members were involved.
Police Version
Police confirmed that seven people were arrested at Ashulia Ghat and that a case was filed against 22 named individuals and 40–45 unidentified persons under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
However, police rejected the other allegations. They claim that by the time they reached the area, the remaining participants had already fled, and only the seven arrested individuals were found at the ghat.
The Recovered Bodies
After June 22, four bodies were recovered from different locations along the Turag River, prompting widespread public speculation.
Awami League activists interviewed by BBC Bangla claimed that at least two of the deceased, Suman and Arif, had participated in the June 22 procession and had disappeared afterwards.
Families' Accounts
BBC Bangla spoke with relatives of one of the deceased, Suman. His family said that they were informed by fellow procession participants that Suman had gone missing on June 22. They subsequently searched the river and contacted police, being later informed that Suman’s body was recovered near Ashulia Bridge.
A relative stated that Suman's body had several reddish marks that the family suspected could be injuries, and that the eyes were missing when the body was recovered several days later.
BBC Bangla’s investigations found that Suman's Facebook account had contained several posts supporting the Awami League before it was later disabled.
Calls for an Independent Investigation
Human rights activist Nur Khan Liton told BBC Bangla that the circumstances require an independent investigation because several plausible scenarios remain unresolved.
He argued that while it is possible some activists drowned while fleeing, other possibilities, including assault in the water or deaths occurring elsewhere before bodies were disposed of in the river, also deserve impartial investigation. He said only an independent inquiry can establish what actually happened.

But the anarchists and propagandists of the Yunus regime and Jamaat-Shibir thugs are threatening the authors, the publisher, and the sellers with mob attacks, forcing two online shops to take down the book yesterday.

For decades, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus had established his image worldwide as a friend of the poor, an advocate of women's empowerment, and a campaigner for microcredit. Through paid campaigns and by the blessings of his Western masters, he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006 for “alleviation of poverty”, even though there are no success stories of microcredit in Bangladesh or elsewhere, millions were trapped in long-term debts. His “social business” model is applicable only in philanthropic schemes, while the “Three Zero” formula is another farce. He became vocal during various political movements and election-centric stalemates since the ’90s, but he never ran for direct office because of his work toward depoliticization. Despite being a campaigner for Bangladesh’s independence, he never paid tribute to the heroic freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War until becoming the Chief Adviser in 2024 as a puppet of the Western powers. His 559-day misrule as the head of the interim government helped people see his real face. Many have understood how he had long been playing tricks from behind a mask to gain power and sell off the country's sovereignty while trampling the spirit of the Liberation War, defaming the martyrs and the heroic freedom fighters.

Who is the real Muhammad Yunus? @aminulhoque1971 and @probirbidhan have come up with a new book 'The Yunus Files: Unmasking of a Fake Saint' that looks at the former Bangladeshi premier with a critical eye. Pick it up.
