5歳の息子は、私の生きがいだった。

あの日、仕事が忙しく、保育園のお迎えを夫に頼んだ。

しかし夫も急な残業になり、息子は祖母と帰ることになった。

帰り道、突然の交通事故で息子は帰らぬ人となった。

病院に駆けつけたとき、そこには息子の小さな靴だけが残されていた。

私は泣きながら夫を責めた。

「あなたが迎えに行っていれば……！」

すると夫は震える手でスマホを差し出した。

そこには事故の直前、息子が送った音声があった。

「ママ、いつもお仕事ありがとう。今日は僕がご飯作るの手伝うね。大好きだよ」

あれから2年。

息子の部屋は、あの日のままにしている。

小さなパジャマも、お気に入りのおもちゃも、何一つ片付けられない。

昨日、息子の誕生日だった。

私は小さなケーキを買い、ろうそくを6本立てた。

そして、誰もいない椅子に向かって歌った。

「お誕生日おめでとう……」

歌い終わっても、返事はなかった。

毎年増えていくろうそくの数。

でも、私の記憶の中の息子は、永遠に5歳のまま。

ねえ、ママはもう怒ってないよ。

だからお願い。

夢の中だけでもいいから、もう一度「ママ」って呼んで……。
