@coridrew This is real life - circa 1964. Back to good old times, before TX discovered air conditioning and 1.4mln people died of starvation every year.
Across the country, states have already passed bills restricting choice. If you're looking for ways to respond, @PPFA, @USOWomen, and many other groups have been sounding the alarm on this issue for years—and will continue to be on the front lines of this fight.
@lana_VK @d_feldman It is not possible to codify moral values with or without religion, authoritarian government, or any other power structure. That is, for any kind of long-term success.
For short term, wars and natural disasters are more conductive to achieving this than any kind of tyrant.
@allenholub I've seen many rewrites. Typical the pitfalls are:
- the existing program was underestimated
- no clear goal was defined
- no lessons were learnt
So far deadlines were missed, millions were lost. People got fired, people quit. So now, I usually advise careful refactoring.😅
@shawndgarner@allenholub The implied efficiency of the "however" has exactly zero value, but causes lots of bugs, rework and frustration - for both users and developers.
@davefarley77 I ask similar questions on either side of the interview.
- what are you proud of, including your personal or team achievement, growth, customer love. Etc.
Hope for a recent story there, not something a decade ago.
- what is typically a struggle?
I just became the first U.S. Secretary of Education to call on President Biden to unilaterally cancel student loan debt. Can I count on you to retweet and help me hit 35k followers so we can spread the word?
@cherthedev It is reasonable to make engineers "eat their dog-food". Once a month fits the bill, I'd want it on my team.
It is weird to involve retail customers, though. Say, engineers do Dash orders delivery to DoorDarsh office, or to feed a random co-worker at their location.
@coridrew@michaellperry Perhaps it is time to step up and take the conversation to the help desk team to make installing _whatever_ that is helpful less painful for people on Windows, or even unavoidable.
Then you can create a standard tutorial how to benefit, and put your time into something new.
@danluu Every time there is this "there's gotta be a way" persistence i found the interviewer wants something very specific, smth their team in particular struggled with.
Not visible or important or even necessarily correct outside of that team or project.
Shrug and move on. Their loss.
@BostonSchools enrollment process is all about giving priority to privileged kids.
The kid is last in line to get into a classroom and are missing school days, when parents are immigrants & speak a language other than English (even if in addition to English).
Up to 80% of elementary school students will get COVID-19 this year, because @GovAbbott banned schools from requiring masks.
None of these kids can get vaccinated, almost none will have medical care - hospitals are already full.
@GovAbbott works hard to damage TX kids.
One of the themes of the new Final Edition of Nudge is that every problem can be helped with nudges, but few can be solved only by nudges. That is true of climate change, and Covid vaccinations. My thoughts here: https://t.co/ORbnHpG5K5
