Ilse Geuze left her parents’ farm in Austria to attend a school for children with disabilities. In Dec. 1940 they were informed that she had been admitted to Hartheim Castle, where no visits or calls were allowed. In January, they received an urn with Ilse's ashes.
On this day in 1943, a 17 year old Dutch Jewish boy perished in Auschwitz. He had been arrested attempting to escape to Switzerland together with seven fellow Palestine Pioneers. His name was Bernhard Aschheim

Today, January 18th, is the birthday of Roland L. Scobee. He died at 62 in the 2013 Federal Way WA shooting. An outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing, he particularly loved spending time with friends and family.

Elie Wiesel was forced on a death march out of Auschwitz 80 years ago #OTD. He and his father, Shlomo, were made to walk miles on foot in the freezing cold and then were placed in open freight cars. They eventually arrived at the Buchenwald concentration camp, where Shlomo died.

Defenders of Ukraine’s 71st Brigade halted a Russian assault in the Vovchansk direction. The enemy attempted to break through using armored vehicles, but one paratrooper disabled an MT-LB with a single-use grenade launcher. The surviving Russians dismounted and attacked a building where Ukrainian soldiers had established their defense.
Ukrainian forces called for backup and engaged in a battle that lasted about three hours. With support from an assault team of allied border guards, the paratroopers cleared the building and captured six occupiers.

🇸🇪 On 17 January 1945, Raoul Wallenberg, neutral Sweden's special envoy in Budapest, was snatched by Red Army SMERSH agents. Using his diplomatic status he had saved thousands of Hungarian Jews from being sent to concentration camps. He disappeared into the Soviet prison system and was never seen again.
18.01.1933 | Samuel Jacob Hoogetooren had a happy childhood with his parents and sister at Valckenierstraat 17a-III in Amsterdam. End of May 1943 he was rounded up. Samuel was murdered in #Sobibor early June 1943, only because he was Jewish. 👇🏽1/4
19 January 1924 | A Jew Anshel Grunberger was born in Gorond. During the war he lived in Munkacs (Mukacevo).
In 1944 he was deported to #Auschwitz. He did not survive.
