For what it’s worth, I think this aspect is partially what makes the film so interesting to think about, to me, but certainly understand why it doesn’t quite work for some.
Honestly surprised I haven’t seen this criticism thrown at the movie more often.
Don’t 100% agree with this take, but I do think it successfully points to the fact that the movie has a very “having its cake and eating it too” aspect to it in terms of its treatment of Niki that most of its fans seem unwilling or unable to grapple with.
"Nikki isn't the villain in Obsession, Bear is." CORRECT! That does not, however, prevent the movie from treating her like a psycho girlfriend trope. The movie is playing to male anxieties while pretending to be a feminist text on "nice guys" trying to possesses women.
@FeralHeather Thanks for the response!
Recently graduated from school and realizing that I'm going to have to get used to approaching people if I'm ever going to build a healthy social life/date so I appreciate you taking the time to answer my query. Have a good one.
@JoePostingg Indicative of an issue on here where people share stuff publicly that they really only should be sharing with their friends. Unfortunately, I suspect this is partially because many of these people don’t have any.
Don't think I would call Hereditary the definitive trend setter of 2010s artsy horror, but I think it certainly was the cultural peak of that trend regardless of how one feels towards it.
@tylergilfoster Yeah, I understand it's a bit annoying, but not a big deal.
Do wonder if they could do something like make a setting where you can say that you want the year associated with films to correspond to the date it went wide in a specific country, but only on your end.
@chasemiffy Will also say that I do also often just go alone because I might just really want to see something and don’t want to deal with the complexities of trying to coordinate with someone.
@chasemiffy If it’s with the right person/people, yes as it can be great to have someone to discuss the movie with afterwords. There have been times though where I’ve seen a movie with the wrong person and it kinda just led to boring or awkward conversations afterwards.
@billbria I read it as pointing to the idea that she had mental health issues in the past, which might’ve played into the way the friend group reacts to her after she gets possessed, didn’t really think about it being meant in a sexual way, but definitely see what you mean.
@skyler_higley I initially felt this, but I think this is actually conflating “villain” and “antagonist.” “Freaky Nikki” is the antagonist that directly causes problems for Bear, but Bear is the villain because he is the one who carries out most of the immoral actions that drive the plot.
Ahora que Nicolas Winding Refn vuelve a primera plana por su estreno en Cannes, os recomiendo esta serie que es lo más loco y fascinante que he visto desde la tercera temporada de Twin Peaks. Una obra maestra que tenéis en Prime
@carouselshotgun Yeah, the fact that he causes so much harm through actions that are driven not by malice, but by mundane and relatable insecurities is part of what makes the film so upsetting to me.
Shows how you don't need to be a complete monster to absolutely ruin someone else's life
@sydfsh@tylekurner I don't know what to say other then that I personally found it to be very entertaining and cathartic in a way very few other recent films have been but whatever. Guess there's no accounting for taste.
@calroseee Yeah, I certainly disagree with aspects of the more harsh black and white readings people have of his character, but he is definitely far from being a good dude.
@tylekurner It’s certainly not the “only meaningful virtue” but I also don’t think it’s wrong to think a movie is acutely depicts phenomena and feelings that deeply resonate with your own lived experiences.
