New in @ChinaBriefJT: mocking Huawei has become a safe way to criticize the Party-state.

When a test video showed brake pedal brackets snapping on Huawei's Maextro V800, it vanished within a day, and the jokes moved from the brakes to the censorship.

The UN just gave its Peace Prize to someone a whistleblower accuses of helping China identify Uyghur dissidents.

Navi Pillay won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on October 9 for her work on international law. Within a day, former UN human rights officer Emma Reilly went public again with a claim she's been making since 2013: that under Pillay's leadership, the UN's human rights office routinely handed Chinese diplomats the names of over 50 Uyghur, Tibetan, and Hong Kong activists seeking to attend UN sessions.

The alleged pattern: China used those names to pressure or detain family members still inside the country. One case Reilly points to is Dolkun Isa, whose name was reportedly confirmed to Chinese officials. Afterward, his mother died in a camp, his father died under unclear circumstances, one brother got a long prison sentence, and another remains missing after a life sentence.

Reilly says that when she raised this internally, Pillay's response was to ask for a different department chair because she felt uncomfortable. The staff who handled the handovers got promoted. Reilly herself was fired in 2021.

The UN has given conflicting answers: admitting the practice existed, claiming it stopped in 2015, denying anyone was put at greater risk. Reilly disputes all of that and says the evidence contradicts it.

No statement yet from Pillay addressing the accusation directly.

A peace prize, and a question nobody in power seems to be answering.

Reading Chinese sources, it's clear that the CCP intends to reach the goal of national rejuvenation (+ its prerequisites: unification, modernity, CNP). Reading CCP actions, you see how these goals bring it closer to confrontation with the West.

12 years ago today, my father, Ilham Tohti, was sentenced to life in prison for “separatism”—a charge that bears no resemblance to the work he dedicated his life to.

My father is an Uyghur economist, scholar, writer, educator, husband, father, and believer. Above all, he was a man who devoted his life and his own resources to fostering dialogue, supporting his community, bridging divides, and helping people understand one another.

He is not the criminal the Chinese government has portrayed him to be. A man who spent his life building bridges should never have been locked behind bars.

For 12 years, our family has lived with his absence. For 9 years, we have had no family visit with him.

Today, on the 12th anniversary of his life sentence, I once again call on the Chinese government: Release Ilham Tohti.

Let my father come home. Let him read, write, think, teach, and love his family freely again! #FreeIlhamTohti

Data is central to the People’s Republic of China’s economic, governance, and military ambitions, but its data ecosystem remains fragmented. Chinese firms have developed products and services analogous to some of Palantir’s capabilities. However, a single national champion able to perform across the PRC's sensitive institutions has yet to emerged. Read the full article through the link below 🔗🇨🇳

Every Party “core” leader since Deng kept that man safe. Zhong is the first to fall.

New in @ChinaBriefJT with @Charles_T_Sun: China's resident medical insurance has lost 83 million contributors in seven years. Beijing's answer is a law that makes enrollment a citizen duty.

Enrollment fell from 1.025 billion in 2019 to 933 million by May 2026. Over the same period the individual premium rose 60 percent and the state subsidy rose 35 percent. For the poorest fifth of rural households, the premium went from 1.2 percent of disposable income in 2003 to 7.4 percent in 2024.

The Health Security Law sets no penalty for failing to enroll. Enforcement runs through the tax authorities, which collect the premium, and the social credit system, which records the lapse. Benefits then start only after a waiting period, three months for new or lapsed enrollees and at least six for anyone out four years or more.

The law fixes what citizens owe. What they receive is set by provincial departments, year by year.

Resident insurance sits at the bottom of a stratified system. Urban employee insurance spends about RMB 6,353 per enrollee; resident insurance spends about RMB 1,190. In 2026 the state puts RMB 724, roughly $101, behind each resident for the whole year. Government health spending is 3.4 percent of GDP, against an OECD average of 7.98.

Fewer contributors, higher premiums, and a duty now written into law.

Distillation has become a key technique accelerating the rise of Chinese AI models. Chinese research documents a deliberate, premeditated effort to distill frontier reasoning and obscure the evidence, aiming to catch up with leading Western models. China has, for the first time, placed individual citizens' overseas investments under a national security review.

New in @ChinaBriefJT, with Charles Sun, on the State Council's outbound investment regulation (Order No. 837), effective July 1:
1."Resident individuals" are now outbound investors under national law: approval, reporting, security review, and penalties. The prior regime reached only enterprises.
2.The review reaches wealth already offshore. Transfer, disposal, and reinvestment of existing assets are all covered. Money already outside the PRC does not exit the framework.
3.Penalties have teeth: forced disposal within a set period, confiscation of gains, fines tied to the investment amount, and multi-year bans.
4.Yet compliance is impossible for now. No grandfather clause, and the implementing rules that would let holders file or regularize have not been issued.
5.The regulation attaches to residence, not account location. Moving the account to Hong Kong, now the world's largest cross-border wealth hub at nearly $3 trillion, changes the venue, not the exposure.

Private outbound flows face a security screen while Beijing courts foreign inflows. No U.S. or European regime subjects residents' investments in the PRC to comparable ex-ante approval.@JamestownTweets
