I was glad that I could participate in this session at the invitation of SESRIC. It highlighted important issues of the data culture, such as the data stewardship, data quality, coordination, partnerships and integration of sources and geo-references and new data sources.

SESRIC organised the Invited Paper Session on "Changing Role of Official Statistics amid Recent Global Developments: Why Data Culture Matters?" on the margins of 64th World Statistics Congress @isi_wsc #isiwsc2023 on 20 July 2023 in Ottawa-Canada.

The panellists of the Session, Dr. Mohd Uzir MAHIDIN (@Dr_Uzir Chief Statistician of Malaysia @StatsMalaysia), Dr. Areef SULEMAN (Director of Economic Research & Statistics @isdbinstitute of @isdb_group), Dr. Juraj RIECAN (@JRiecan Former Director of Statistics Division @UNESCWA) and Dr. Atilla KARAMAN (Director of Statistics & Information of @SESRIC), covered both the theoretical and practical sides of data culture, how to instil data culture within national statistical systems through modernising statistical legislations and building up statistical coordination mechanisms, developing national data platforms (such as Open DOSM) to inculcate data culture in their respective countries, and the efforts of international organisations and multilateral development banks (SESRIC, IsDB, and UNESCWA) in contributing to the strengthening of data culture in their respective member countries.

The Session, attended by 17 participants from different countries and international organisations, ended with a recap by @JRiecan of the presentations delivered and a lively discussion segment that also focused on the integration of geospatial information in official statistics for a more comprehensive and robust data culture.
