IOA Session has approved Cricket and Squash as part of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games programme. Across, Flag Football and Baseball+Softball have also been approved. There will be 11092 athletes in the Games as opposed to the 10350 as envisaged earlier.

📌 Behind the Scenes of the IOC Session: IOC President announces plans to create Olympic Esports Games

🔹 Stunning performances highlighted the opening of the 141stIOC Session tonight in Mumbai. It was a fascinating presentation of India’s culture and history (see pictures), highlighted by IOC Member Nita Ambani playing a leading role.

🔹 But it is not just sport, culture and history that mixes at the opening ceremonies of IOC Sessions and leaves the audience impressed. The event is also the opportunity for the IOC President to define the future course of the IOC. In his speech tonight, IOC President Thomas Bach covered Artificial Intelligence (AI), esports and the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024. One sentence stood out and lead immediately to global headlines: “To compete successfully in this race, I have asked our new IOC Esports Commission to study the creation of Olympic Esports Games.”

🔹 Since the first Olympic Esports Forum back in 2018 in Lausanne, the IOC has been engaging with the esports community in a holistic way. “We chose an approach that would allow us to be active in the esports space while staying true to our values that have guided us for over a century. With respect to esports, our values are and remain the red line that we will not cross. Our crystal clear position is gaining more and more respect in the esports community,“ said Thomas Bach.

🔹 Following the forum, the IOC setup an Esports Liaison Group to have a platform to engage with all the esports stakeholders, and developed the Olympic Virtual Series in 2021. It was a first pilot venture in esports before launching the Olympic Esports Week in Singapore earlier this year.

🔹 “In Singapore we saw proof that our holistic approach is working. We successfully brought together the Olympic and the esports communities,” noted the IOC President. A highlight was the thrilling live finals, created in collaboration with IFs and publishers. Over 130 players from across the globe came together to compete in the Olympic spirit on the global stage, in 10 mixed-gender category events. Players were cheered on by a full house of fans, with all the action streamed online. The Olympic Esports Series attracted over 500,000 unique participants.

🔹 Then came the announcement: “This was a promising start. But it is just that: a start. It is like in any sport: after the promising start, the real race still lies ahead. To compete successfully in this race, I have asked our new IOC Esports Commission to study the creation of: Olympic Esports Games.”

🔹 We might look back in a few years from now at tonight’s Opening Ceremony and say: “I was there when history was written.”
