I thought the book was very informative, especially to my psych & soc. classes. I don't know if we'll ever fix the issues though. #ageofopp

Final thoughts? #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 I disdain it and will let my students know such. Too many autocratic teachers out there. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 I still go back to students being passed along when they shouldn't be. Stop this and HS would be better #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 Exactly. belonging/fitting in is very important to them. They need to feel as if they belong in the classroom. #ageofopp

I thought chapter 8 was the best chapter. Very informative to me as a teacher and (hopefully) future administrator. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 I agree. Stop teaching/parenting using fear and threats and instead be authoritative: warm, supportive, & firm #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 Great advice. Advice that more and more people refuse to follow. Especially the rule about jobs. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

In general, what are your thoughts on this book? Do you feel it was beneficial to teaching & education? #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 I feel that we do punish adolescents too harshly, but consequences are important. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 That's unfortunate and its when I'd be looking for a new job. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 as such, I have a lower failure rate. Students don't want to earn a failing grade. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 I make it very clear that students earn their grade, if they pass they earned it, if they fail they earned it. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 It's the biggest issue IMO. We worry too much about passage and graduation rates. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 They stop making progress because they aren't ready for it. Kids are passed along before they should be. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 @CarmenH09000255 I think that is really what Steinberg is trying to sell. It starts with proper parenting. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@CarmenH09000255 Parents brag about their misbehaviors at school growing up, kids then think it is what they should do. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 @CarmenH09000255 plus what they've learned needs to be reinforced at home and it isn't. #ageofopp

[Justin Sumner @js19015]

@JamesByrd80 I think the parents don't want schools to teach "character." I doubt it'd be very effective. #ageofopp
