On May 31, 1921, a white supremacist mob attacked a thriving business district known as Black Wall Street. Hundreds of residents in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa were killed as Black homes, businesses, and churches were burned to the ground.
103 years later, this history must be taught and remembered. I am grateful for Mother Fletcher, the oldest known survivor, for continuing to underscore the horrors of what happened in Tulsa.
Together, we must fight extremists’ attempts to ban books and rewrite our past. Moving toward progress, justice, and opportunity for all requires that we speak the truth.
We don’t truly honor our history by putting pics of historical figures on the wall or reciting quotes. We honor our history by getting up every day and fighting for those of us who have the least power and resources. #TheStruggleContinues

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO CIVIL RIGHTS LEGEND XERNONA CLAYTON!!! At 93, she outworks everyone in her pursuit of Justice, Equality and the Dream that Dr. King articulated 60 years ago at the March on Washington!!! From her work at SCLC as Dr. King’s Assistant, creating the Trumpet Awards, creating the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame, helping integrate America’s hospitals, working for the Urban League, being the first black woman to have a television show in the South, having a school in Africa and countless other projects, her career and contributions are unmatched!!! It was a pleasure to celebrate her birthday together once again just as it is a pleasure to serve on the Xernona Clayton Foundation Board of Directors as she continues her work!!! #XernonaClayton #TrumpetAwards #SCLC #ULSTL #UrbanLeague #CivilRights
