#FactsAboutKFCB: The Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) is a State Agency under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, mandated by the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222 of the Laws of Kenya to regulate the creation, broadcasting, possession, distribution, and exhibition of film and broadcast content.
Regulation of film and broadcast content is meant to ensure that content meant for public exhibition conforms to Kenyaโs culture, moral values, and National aspirations, as well as to protect children from exposure to inappropriate content.
Regarding the Watershed Period (5 am -10 pm), the Kenya Information and Communications Act (KICA), requires all broadcasters to ensure that audio-visual content meant for public exhibition is examined and classified by KFCB.
Film and broadcast content examined and classified by KFCB is rated as: GE (General Exhibition), PG (Parental Guidance Recommended),
16 (unsuitable for persons under the age of 16), 18 (Restricted to adults only) and Restricted/banned.
In examining and classifying film and broadcast content, the KFCB is guided by classifiable elements among them: violence and crime, sex, obscenity and nudity, occult and horror, drugs, alcohol and other harmful substances, religion and community and propaganda for war, hate speech and incitement.
Further, Cap 222, mandates KFCB to register and license film agents, local and international filmmakers, distributors, and exhibitors, as well as to give consumer advice by empowering film and broadcast content consumers with the knowledge to make informed choices.
The KFCB advises content creators to acquire the requisite licenses for the creation, distribution, possession, and exhibition of film and broadcast content that is meant for public consumption.
In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, KFCB remains committed to protecting children and vulnerable adults from exposure to inappropriate content, while ensuring a facilitative regulatory environment aimed at spurring the growth of the Creative Economy in line with the Fifth Pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and the Talanta Hela Initiative. @AbabuNamwamba@moyasa_ke@SDY_Ke@NellyMuluka
