Eastern Bangkok Faces Critical Flood Risk After Heavy Rain

Eastern Bangkok is facing the city’s most critical flood risk, with Prawet Burirom Canal receiving heavy runoff from Lat Krabang and surrounding areas, Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said.

Bangkok is accelerating drainage toward the Chao Phraya River through the Phra Khanong pumping station, which can handle 145 cubic meters per second. Four pumps are operating and removing water faster than it is reaching the station.

Continuous rain and inflows from smaller canals have kept the canal’s water level from falling. Khlong Sam Wa recorded Bangkok’s highest 24-hour rainfall at 159 millimeters.

The Thai Meteorological Department placed Bangkok and several provinces under its highest rainfall alert, warning of continued heavy rain through September 27. Authorities urged residents in high-risk areas to prepare for possible flooding.
