Anush and his team’s efforts made me a believer that ROCm could compete. Trust me, I was a skeptic.
Anush would and still does personally respond on X publicly to every credible criticism, not with excuses or defensiveness, but with action. I really admire that and wish more tech execs would do that.
I remember when ROCm, first launched in 2016, had a quarterly release schedule for major (kinda) feature releases. Now it’s every 6 weeks.

There has been a lot of conjecture and debate on Helios shipments.
I asked Lisa:
“@LisaSu, can you talk a little bit about the complexity of what it takes to get it there, and also second half deployments? How do how does AMD define deployment, and talk about your confidence in in getting there?”
Her response:
Yeah, thank you, Pat. So let me start first with a very clear acknowledgement. Hopefully, you saw it from the hardware that we had on stage. I mean, Helios is incredible. I mean, it’s an incredible feat of engineering capability that really has incredible compute, you know, cooling, integration, density, all of those things.
Now, Pat, I think the important thing for people to remember is we have been planning for this moment for the last several years in terms of both what we have built internally. You know, Vamsi and his entire team on the platform and the software capability for Helios. You know Forrest and his entire team on the networking capability, our acquisition of Pensando, our acquisition of ZT Systems, our integration of all those capabilities, and perhaps the secret sauce that I hope you can kind of get a feel for from today is we are in lockstep with our partners.
So in other words, we are co-developing. It’s not like you know AMD is developing and then we hand it over to our partners. No, OpenAI is co-developing with us. Meta is co-developing with us. You saw some of the comments from Tom Brown at Anthropic. We are in a place where I think we are highly confident in the ramp, declaring production means we are ready to ship. We’re going to start shipments at the end of the third quarter. They’re going to continue to ramp into the fourth quarter and into the first half of next year.
We have planned the exact data centers that the first shipments are going to go into. We’re working very closely with our ODM partners, who are together ensuring. I think the difference with Helios is every part of the supply chain needs to be aligned, and you know that has also been one of our key vectors. But we’re feeling really good about it. Thanks.”
I’m taking this as incredibly confident.

AMD keeps the Advancing AI drumbeat going and announces jointly with Anthropic a formal Helios commitment. There were rumors out there, ROCm job listings and even a GitHub YAML file listing Anthropic as a customer, but it's official now. Here are the deets:
•up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct MI450 Series GPUs in Helios rackscale solutions, first gigawatt deployment begins 1H27.
•same stack Microsoft committed to Monday: MI455X GPUs, 6th Gen EPYC "Venice" CPUs, Pensando networking, and ROCm.
•positioned for training AND inference, unlike Azure's inference-only framing.
•builds on Anthropic's existing use of MI355X, which had not been officially disclosed until now.
•multiyear engineering collab: Claude will be used to optimize Instinct workloads and accelerate ROCm development. That goes right at the software maturity questions that reportedly held up Anthropic's evaluation.
•AMD will broadly adopt Claude across its engineering and product development teams.
•AMD committed to a strategic equity investment of up to $5B in Anthropic "in the future."
•Anthropic is now arguably the most compute-diversified frontier lab: Google TPUs, AWS Trainium, NVIDIA, and AMD.
Note the deal structure inversion. With OpenAI and Meta, the customers got AMD warrants. Here AMD is the one writing the check, up to $5B into its customer. Vendor financing keeps evolving.
No details on compute purchase value, deal length, hosting sites, or the training vs. inference split. No equity terms, timing, or valuation either. "Committed to make... in the future" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

As everything slowly begins to sink-in, and after finally getting some sleep last night, I wanted to share a small personal note…✍️
The first call I made after Vikram-1 successfully reached orbit was to my Dad.
He is the man who made my journey possible—with dreams for me far bigger than the ones I had for myself, and by simply never giving up on me.
Until my 8th standard, I was a bad student. I scored 51 marks in Maths and even failed another subject. Back then, I could never have imagined that I would one day make it to an IIT—or have the privilege of contributing to India’s first privately developed rocket reaching orbit, making India only the third country in the world to achieve this.
When I called him after the launch, he just cried.
And cried.
He couldn’t speak a single word.
But I understood every word he couldn’t say.
I managed to hold back my tears when Vikram-1 reached orbit. But somehow, writing this, I can’t.
Thank you, Dad. ❤️
