It should come as no great surprise that a Democratic Party which has abandoned working class people would find that the working class has abandoned them.

While the Democratic leadership defends the status quo, the American people are angry and want change.

And they’re right.

I have a friend who posted today that he had left the left. I’ve known him for several years and we talked on the phone a couple of weeks ago.

On the level of the mind we have diverged, but on the level of the heart our affection remains unbroken. He knows he’s not going to change my vote and I know I’m not going to change his. There was no need, and both of us are spiritually disciplined enough to know this, to cast aspersions on the other’s beliefs. We expressed our opinions and we heard each other. Both of us will vote our heart.

Let’s do what we can today to promote our beliefs, but as much as anything let’s purify the airways of the toxicity and anger that lurk around this election. What matters now is a free and fair election, that all of us can trust was a true expression of the will of the people. We will be called on over the next few days - no matter who wins - to be repairers of the breach. Tomorrow will be the end of one phase of things and the beginning of another. Let’s pray for peace. Let’s pray for love.
