I’m 72. I’ve testified 3 times before Congress, given a keynote address at the World Bank, traveled to Moscow at the invitation of the Russian Government, appeared on the News Hour with Jim Lehrer, have published 4 books and 150+ articles, teach at a university. Etc., etc.

And I’m a gamer. Have been for 50 years.

I’ve been teaching a class on real-world software engineering (CS 428, BYU) for nearly a decade. I tell my students that modern computer game design & development represents the pinnacle of applied computer science, because it not only draws upon every major aspect - algorithms, data structures & databases, data consistency, simulation, physics modeling, graphics, real-time performance, UI/UX, networking, AI, scalability, etc - but it also has to be _entertaining_.

In terms of dollar sales, the computer game industry is larger than Hollywood and the music industry combined - close to $200 billion/year. Furthermore, playing most computer games requires vastly more active intellectual engagement than passively consuming streaming content. Yet you don’t hear people disparaging watching movies and TV shows or listing to music as “childish.”

It’s fine to not be personally interested in computer games. Dismissing & denigrating those who are says more about you than about the industry.

Only sell if you think their products & services are trending worse. Don’t panic when the market does.
