Cuando yo empecé, a mucha gente le resultaba contradictorio que una mujer con mi melena rubia y mis pechos enormes intentara convertirse en una actriz respetada, y por eso hubo quienes no me tomaron en serio. Tuve que cargar con ese prejuicio y no dejar que me aplastara, y comprendí que la única forma que tenía de hacerlo desaparecer era trabajar muy duro. Desde entonces nunca he especulado con mi imagen. Nunca interpreté a mujeres de 25 o 30 años después de cumplir los 40, ni a mujeres de 40 cuando ya era obvio que yo los había dejado atrás hacía tiempo. Nunca me ha dado miedo la edad. La industria preferiría que las actrices no cumpliéramos años. A mí me enfurece cuando alguien me dice, "qué bien estás, para la edad que tienes". Me resulta insultante. En todo caso, el edadismo que sufrimos las actrices es un reflejo del que sufrimos las mujeres en general, y no solo las maduras. Me parece muy triste que mujeres jóvenes sientan la necesidad de usar Botox o hacerse retoques a causa de la imagen que se les exige que tengan. El feminismo ha hecho muchos avances últimamente, pero esa presión ha aumentado.

My family’s American story began exactly 85 years ago today. On July 1, 1941, the S.S. Santa Lucia docked in New York harbor after a 9-day voyage from Buenaventura, Colombia. On board was a 21-year named George Landau, who had fled Austria for Colombia in 1938, was hired there by the Otis Elevator Company, and then transferred to their New York office. He is listed on the ship’s manifest as a “Secretary,” and spoke English, Spanish, and German. He went on to volunteer for the US army after Pearl Harbor, became an American citizen in 1943, fought in Europe in WWII, and later became a 3-time US Ambassador. George Landau was my father, and July 1 was always a special day for him. God bless America! 🇺🇸

I retired as a county coroner six weeks ago.
