“The Lovecats” was written by Robert Smith and released on 21 October 1983 as a standalone single. It later appeared on the compilation Japanese Whispers.
It became The Cure’s first UK Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 7, and reached No. 6 in Australia. The video was shot in a mansion the band had “borrowed” from an estate agent who thought they wanted to buy it. Smith later distanced himself from the song, even though it was the one that finally put The Cure in the British Top 10.
