Many more firefighters have since suffered from diseases likely linked to toxic substances present at ground zero.

Today, Firefighters will observe a minute's silence at 13.46 – the time in the UK when the first plane impacted the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

In the aftermath of 9/11, Steve Buscemi returned to his old fire station, where he had served as a firefighter in the early 1980s.

Donning his old uniform, he worked 12 hour shifts for days on end, searching for survivors in the rubble of the World Trade Center.

He did so without media attention, a quiet act of courage that later became a powerful symbol of solidarity.

And on September 11, 2001 the key in his pocket suddenly became one of the most important keys in America.

His name was William Rodriguez.

He had worked at the World Trade Center for roughly 20 years.

That morning, Rodriguez was in the basement of the North Tower when American Airlines Flight 11 struck the building.

Chaos erupted.

A badly burned man appeared.

Rodriguez helped him.

Then he could have gotten out.

He went back … Because Rodriguez had something almost nobody else in that building had:

It opened the stairwell doors throughout the North Tower.

Firefighters and police were rushing into a building thousands of terrified people were trying to escape.

Rodriguez knew the building.

And he had the key.

So he went UP with the rescuers.

Floor after floor.

Door after door.

Unlock. Open. Keep moving.

People were coming down.

Rodriguez kept going up.

He reportedly made it as high as the 39th floor before firefighters ordered him to turn around.

Think about that.

The building had been struck by a passenger jet.

Smoke was spreading.

People were desperately trying to get OUT.

And the janitor was climbing farther INSIDE.

Rodriguez eventually made it back down and survived.

But approximately 200 people he knew at the World Trade Center did not.

25 years later he still carries the memories of that morning.

And he still has the master key.

We remember the firefighters.

We remember the police officers.

We remember the passengers who fought back.

William Rodriguez wasn’t carrying a badge.

He wasn’t carrying a weapon.

He was carrying something much simpler.

A key.

And when America was attacked, he used what he had to help save whoever he could.

Troops from the UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Spain, Poland, Norway, Romania, Turkey, New Zealand, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Finland, and many others joined the fight in Afghanistan.

More than one thousand of these soldiers paid the ultimate price. When the US asked, NATO helped - no hesitation. Yet today, Donald Trump is constantly criticizing America's closest allies, even starting trade wars with them.

This is the boy who quenched the thirst of half a million Africans. His name is Ryan, and he was born in Canada in May 1991.

When he was a child, just six years old, his teacher told the class about how children live in Africa. Deeply moved by the fact that some even die of thirst—while he could simply go to the tap and drink clean water—Ryan asked the teacher how much it would cost to bring water to Africa. She mentioned an organization called “WaterCan,” which could build wells for about $70.

When he got home, he went straight to his mother, Susan, and told her he needed $70 to buy a well for African children. His mother told him he would have to earn the money through hard work and gave him chores that allowed Ryan to earn a few dollars each week.

Eventually, he saved up the $70 and went to WaterCan, where they told him the actual cost of drilling a well was $2,000. Susan made it clear she couldn’t give him all that money, but Ryan didn’t give up—he promised he would come back with the full $2,000.

He continued doing chores around the neighborhood to raise money, inspiring his brothers, neighbors, and friends to join in and help until they raised the necessary funds. In January 1999, the well was drilled in a village in northern Uganda.

Once the well was ready, Ryan’s school started to help, and they established contact with the school near the well. That’s how Ryan met Akana, a boy who fought to go to school every day. Ryan was so moved that he asked his parents to take him to meet Akana. In 2000, he arrived in the village, where hundreds of people greeted him, forming a corridor and chanting his name.

“They even know my name?” Ryan asked the guide, surprised.

“Everyone within 100 kilometers knows,” the guide replied.

Today, Ryan is 33 years old, runs his own foundation, and has brought over 400 wells to Africa. He is also responsible for providing education and teaching locals how to take care of the wells and manage water.

While we go through so many meaningless things, nothing is more righteous than paying tribute to a true hero.

What's truly disgusting is what the serial lying conman did next. He publicly pledged $10,000 to the Twin Towers Fund after Howard Stern's drive. New York City's comptroller later found no record of that donation in the year after the attacks. He grabbed the reimbursement. He stiffed the pledge. Over 300 search & rescue dogs worked Ground Zero and the Pentagon. They climbed twisted steel, breathed toxic dust, and searched until their paws were raw.

Apollo (NYPD German Shepherd) was first on the pile, 15 minutes after the South Tower fell.

Trakr (German Shepherd from Canada) found the last living survivor 27 hours later.

Sirius, a Port Authority yellow Lab, never made it out — the only working dog killed that day.

These dogs didn’t ask for medals. They just did the job.

Honor them. Remember them.
