Father Mychal Judge, a Catholic priest and FDNY chaplain, entered the North Tower alongside firefighters and remained at the command post in the lobby, administering last rites and comforting firefighters and victims.

When the South Tower collapsed, the resulting blast of debris fatally struck him, making Father Judge the first officially recorded casualty of the September 11 attacks.

Master Sgt. Roddie Edmonds was 25. Knoxville, Tennessee. Highest-ranking American NCO at Stalag IX-A near Ziegenhain, Germany.

He had been captured in the Battle of the Bulge. About 1,275 American prisoners were under him. Roughly 200 of them were Jewish.

January 1945. The Germans ordered the Jewish POWs to report the next morning. Edmonds knew what that order meant. He had already watched Jewish soldiers get pulled out at the last camp.

That night he told his men they were not doing it.

The next morning every American fell out in front of the barracks.

Major Siegmann looked at the formation and said they could not all be Jews.

Edmonds answered:
“We are all Jews here.”

Siegmann put a Luger to his forehead.

Edmonds did not move.

He told the major the Geneva Convention only required name, rank, and serial number.

If he pulled the trigger, he would have to shoot all of them and after the war he would be tried for war crimes.

The major walked away.

About 200 Jewish Americans were not separated that morning.

Roddie Edmonds came home and almost never talked about it. He told his family some things were too hard. He died in 1985.

Years later his son Chris Googled his father’s name for a school project and found a survivor who said he owed Edmonds his life.

In 2015, Yad Vashem named Roddie Edmonds Righteous Among the Nations. First American serviceman ever given that honor.

One of only a handful of Americans on the list.

He did not give a speech.
He gave one sentence with a gun to his head.

He was 54. Chief of Department. The highest-ranking uniformed firefighter in New York.

Peter J. Ganci Jr. joined the FDNY in 1968. He had been a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. He worked engines and ladders in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He crawled into a burning apartment and pulled a child out. He once answered a trapped-firefighter call from home in shorts and boat shoes. He liked to say he had 11,000 kids.

He lived in North Massapequa with his wife, Kathleen. They had three children: Peter, Chris, and Danielle. The night of September 10 he fell asleep during a movie with Chris.

The next morning he raced from Brooklyn headquarters with Chief Dan Nigro. Over the bridge Nigro said it would be the worst day of their lives.

Ganci set the command post on West Street, on a ramp into a garage. He sent companies up both towers. When the South Tower came down they went into the garage. The basement filled with dust. They found a stair and came up. He ordered the post moved north, away from the building that was still standing.

Then he went south.

Firefighters told him to leave. He waved them on. Giuliani saw him minutes before and said, “God bless you, Pete.” Ganci told his aide they would need more trucks for search and recovery. He was still on the radio when the North Tower came down.

They found him that afternoon where the first command post had been. They knew him by the patent leather shoes. The radio was with him.

He was the only Chief of Department in FDNY history to die in the line of duty.

He left behind Kathleen, Peter, Chris, and Danielle. Peter was already FDNY, Ladder 111 in Brooklyn. He was working that morning. Chris became FDNY. Danielle married a firefighter.

He is memorialized at the South Pool on Panel S-17.

Never forget Peter Ganci.

Then Germany. She was finally free. She could have disappeared into a quiet life. Instead, she spoke. In December 2015, Nadia stood before the UN Security Council.

She was 22. Her words were fearless. She described girls being sold like cattle. Mothers murdered. A culture being erased. The world listened.

In 2016, the UN recognized the genocide against the Yazidis. But Nadia wasn’t finished. She turned survival into action.

In 2018, she founded Nadia’s Initiative, helping rebuild villages, schools, and clinics while supporting survivors seeking justice.

That same year, at 25, Nadia became the first Iraqi woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. The world applauded.

Nadia looked toward those still captive. For her, that was the prize that mattered— their freedom. She continues speaking for the thousands killed and those still missing.

Every telling carries pain. But silence carries a cost too. Nadia transformed suffering into purpose. Trauma into testimony. Survival into a demand for justice.

ISIS tried to reduce her to property. History remembers her by her name. Nadia Murad.

Not because she escaped what happened—but because she survived, stood before the world, and refused to let silence have the final word.
