@margaux_dcim Especially being in the spotlight during her relationship, Selena Gomez makes an amazing example for a celebrity and leader. I think she’s informed me more about what Lupus really is and how it affects a person more than anything else. Her awareness on self worth is amazing too!
@katelyn_dcim@EmmaWatson Emma Watson was one of the celebrities I was thinking of too! The way she stands for feminism and the way she encourages her supporters to remain informed definitely puts her in the category of a leader as well!
Lastly, after reading through Celebrity Politics: The Politics of Late Modernity, Zendaya further portrays both a celebrity and leader through her strong belief in bith change and voting within elections. She shows Gen-Z that women have an important place in entertainment too!
#LIDCF21_91@Zendaya exemplifies a leader within the world of celebrities even in her early career in Disney, as a then young family-friendly role model. She went into productions wanting female main roles to contribute to change within entertainment.
Further, Zendaya uses her popularity for change. She is heavily interested in making s change, by consistently telling her majority Gen-Z audience to go out and vote. Additionally, she has advocated for Black Lives Matter, further solifying a role in activism leadership.
@ShoshanaFishman@MichellePhan Michelle Phan is a powerhouse when it comes to speaking about Bitcoin, and how exactly she built her digital kingdom. She isn’t in the headlines but is a mogul and an example of new power especially when she speaks to her platform about Bitcoin. #LIDCF21_91
@sindhuinala I agree! I think one of the biggest hints of New Power are these influential people using social media primarily, to connect with their target audience! The power social media gives influence is like no other and it certainly gives people a digital platform. #LIDCF21_91
This article delves deeper into the leadership Jackie Aina has taken with her advocacy and working since 2009 to build a base of supporters on her way to changing the industry.

@jackieaina is an example of “New Power” for her advocacy of inclusion within the beauty community. Amassing over 3.5 million subscribers, she has built a personal brand of peers and is expanding to other avenues such as her brand @Forvrmood#LIDCF21_91
@JulesShania I think the internet has given people voices to share many struggles and things such as virtual communities can bring people together to speak about commonalities between them, making topics like mental health much more mainstream and positive in terms of staying informed!
@Michael_RU20 I agree with the other comments in that the internet has given light to everybody’s insecurities. To combat those feelings, I think that people may hide or exaggerate parts of themselves to lessen those specific insecurities (even if another person’s doesn’t see them)!
@ericaandself Virtual communities certainly give a little bit of both. Because they usually surround specific topics/interests, it can give light to an aspect of a person’s personality, but can also exaggerate that part of them since it is isolated within the specific topic of the community!
Over the years, social media has created an alternate realm where it’s cultural norms have spilled into real life expectations. How do you think social media has affected the way we expect people to behave? #selfsocietyclass
@jessnguyenRU This is a great example of the ways in which dating apps have tried to crack down on identity verification in order to avoid cat fishing. I think your example made the term catfish mainstream and well known- helping dating apps to develop more #selfsocietyclass
@MelanieRutgers It’s always interesting to me to understand how celebrities go about engaging in screen time, as well as what their screen times would be. For some reason I think of them as busy a lot, so it’s interesting to think about who internet addiction affects! #selfsocietyclass
@ericaandself Screen time is a great indication to see how much/where you spent your time virtually. Before my current job, the pandemic had me stuck at home on my phone constantly! It becomes addicting to scroll even when you know you’re bored! Great example #selfsocietyclass
To add, this is a great example of risks involved with teenage social media use. Livingstone recognizes this as a balance between opportunity (identity, sociability here) and risks (this being misunderstanding) that happens by internet-mediated communication (Livingstone 407).
Viral Tiktok user Charli D’Amelio was in her family’s newest YouTube video, and made a joke about her amount of followers. This was seen with disrespect, as she lost over 1M followers in just days, and faced harsh backlash on her social media over her words. #selfsocietyclass
