In a year of weather records, yesterday was 0.92°C above the 1991-2020 mean and fully 1.75°C above the 1850-1900 IPCC baseline.
Year-to-date the planet is now 1.37°C above the 1850-1900 baseline, with about a 50% chance to break the Paris limit for the year.
The 2023 Canadian wildfire season has been unprecedented:
- 5% of Canada's forest area burned
- 43 million acres of forest scorched, greater than the size of Florida
- 3x more carbon produced than previous record wildfire year
- 2.5x more acres burned than previous record year
