@AnIndividualist@neilbowers@JohnLewisRetail The earlier ones were paper vouchers, which did NOT have expiry dates on them (I’ve just double checked one to be certain). It is a wheeze on their part to sell something that recipients might forget to use, so have profited from without exchanging goods for…
The Saturday morning favourite first hit screens in 1976, bringing swaps, stars and plenty of chaos to a generation of viewers. What do you remember most about Swap Shop?

BBC Breakfast ran a feature this morning marking the 50th anniversary of Swap Shop with contributions from John Craven and Maggie Philbin.

@robmpow83@KirstieMAllsopp@MartinSLewis And yet she wanted to undertake a career of huge benefit to society, and these days has to undertake this course/accrue student loan debt. Are you advocating for no one to train for this vital role anymore because they are daft to accrue the debt?
@tokennorthsufc@griffo44374@MartinSLewis In which case there is no point in being financially prudent for your retirement. Might as well live on benefits all working life, as so many do already; system really won’t cope with even less working people paying taxes
@tokennorthsufc@griffo44374@MartinSLewis And yet the working population have contributed during their career/employment…… punished for being financially prudent?
@koalakitch@mum3003@SteveCampF1@MartinSLewis Good luck with that, bet it will be an even older age by the time you get nearer to retirement; I expect then you will start complaining……
@QcWynter@O2 2/2 anything of value in the car; or if chancing it make sure stuff is already in the boot before you arrive, never fiddle with the boot & show anyone what you might have in there…. People can be such a let down….understatement….
@QcWynter@O2 1/2 The difficulty is that the thieves know people are likely to be gone for a few hours at places like this. Read somewhere that they often park up at places like this and watch people arrive and sometime move stuff into their car boots, and then pounce. Advice was to not leave
@RupertLowe10 He filmed himself committing a clear and obvious crime then put it on the internet, Rupert. Why not make yourself a nice cuppa tea, sit down in a quiet room and think a little about why the CPS were able to make a quick decision on this one.
Andrew Neil on #bbcqt: "The big problem we face is 6.7 million adults of working age who aren't working and are living on out-of-work benefits. 6.7 million. No country can prosper with that number of people able to work who are not working."
The first half is broadly right. DWP figures show 6.7 million people in Great Britain claimed some combination of out-of-work benefits in March 2026. However, the second half is misinformation because it misdescribes that statistic.
DWP's out-of-work benefits category deliberately includes people the state has assessed as unable to work, or does not currently expect to work.
DWP's own breakdown shows that 4.6 million of the 6.7 million, around 68%, have no work requirements at all.
DWP explains that this is generally because they are too sick to work or are the main carer for a very young child. That group includes 2.8 million Universal Credit claimants on the health route and 390,000 on Employment and Support Allowance and older incapacity benefits.
Only 2.2 million, about a third, are expected to take any steps towards work, and 590,000 of those are themselves on the health route.
Treating the whole 6.7 million as available labour turns a count of claimants into a count of idle workers, which the data simply does not support.
The official labour market figures tell a very different story. The ONS puts unemployment, meaning people actively looking for and available for work, at 1.78 million for May to July 2026. The Learning and Work Institute estimates that 3.9 million people are out of work but say they want a job, and that there are 5.5 of them for every vacancy.
There is a serious debate to be had about rising sickness claims and appropriate support. It is not helped by presenting people the state itself has judged unable to work, or not required to, as if they were simply choosing not to.
Nobody challenged Neil. Nobody corrected the misinformation. Neil got a round of applause. Someone could have told Fiona Bruce the facts in less than a minute. This is just one example which helps explain why many people understandably treat @bbcquestiontime as a joke.

Developers are being told they can now pay to trash and override environmental legal protections.
Why are the big environment charities being so silent? 👇👇👇
Labour’s claims of a ‘win/win’ for nature and development is gaslighting and it needs to stop @andyburnham This 1st environmental delivery plan (EDP) allows 83% of the nitrogen pollution to go ahead in our protected rivers but It’s not too late! Here’s what you need to know 🧵
@TheJockeyClub why is the Simply Red presale not accessing the premier tickets (only the paddock ones)? Everything implies both were up for presale today??
This summer, Reform-led Kent County Council voted to include Oaken Wood in its minerals plan.
If approved, at least 41 hectares of this ancient woodland would be destroyed, making it the largest loss of ancient woodland in England this century.
At a time when our nature is already under pressure, we can’t afford to lose woodlands habitats like Oaken Wood.
That’s why I’ve signed @CHinchliffMP's letter calling on the Government to save Oaken Wood and strengthen protections for ancient woodland across England.
The UK's deregulated freezone architecture has now survived three Prime Ministers of two different parties without changing its function once.
Sunak designated Teesside as his flagship freeport in 2021.
Ben Houchen handed a 90% stake in Teesworks Ltd to two local businessmen who invested nothing, via a £1 per acre land option on land the public had already paid to remediate.
£560 million of public money spent or committed. 20 to 30 permanent jobs at the end of it.
