In this week's People of ACM profile, we interview Julia Gersey, the new EiC of @XRDS_ACM, the popular student magazine. Gersey, a PhD student @UMichCS, discusses her work in sensor networks and embedded devices. Read the full interview here: https://t.co/vcbmriAw5b
XRDS Crossroads: The ACM Magazine for Students welcomes Julia Gersey as the new Editor-in-Chief. Gersey is second-year PhD student at The University of Michigan (https://t.co/C639TxYa9g)
The appointment is from November 1, 2025 to October 31, 2028.
What I love about research is you never lose anything. For any project regardless of its outcome, if you: 1. had fun, 2. learned something, then I'd call that a victory! If it happened to make some impact in the field, even better!
100% the best mindset one can have, especially during their PhD years
had some wonderful advisors during my undergrad remind me the goal is to get better everyday. some days it’s 0.1%, others it’s more notable. but get better and progress everyday — it will show over time
other “wins” include:
> 4.0 gpa (although this doesn’t really matter… was something i’m still happy about)
> gearing up towards qualifying exam
> in a great lab! surrounded by peers & an advisor who i have already learned a ton from
> mentored some amazing undergrads!
w/ the 2nd year of my phd starting tmrw, reflecting on year one (since research progress has felt *very slow* lately…)
> best poster award for “Sniffing Out the City” https://t.co/hxLB4nYFlX
> awarded a DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship ( @doecsgf )
two big wins!
👏 Big congrats to ECE PhD student Julia Gersey on earning a Best Poster Award at ACM #SenSys 2025!
